    Default frugal quilt guts

Over the years I have used various materials for quilt guts, but I have never used tshirts( bottom portions zig-zagged together). I need everyone's opinion...do you think that tshirts would be okay to use? Currently I am working on a denim quilt & will be using different patterns/colors of plaid flannel for the back.

Wouldn't it bunch up when you wash it?

I think they would work if you sew them all together so they don't bunch up even though the quilt is tied or quilted. I use all sorts of "filling" also. I seem to have lots of fleece ends and pieces I'm thinking about sewing together and using inside the next quilt.

I've sewn bits & pieces of "filler"( quilted material pieces, cloth diapers, blankets) too & I've never had a problem with bunching.I've actually had worse luck with the store bought batting. Even though I would quilt instead of tacking the quilt, over time, the batting would come loose & bunch up....bummer

I don't know about t-shirts. They're stretchy. Though the denim would stabilize them. I'm assuming you are hand tying or hand quilting? I comment because they use a different needle than a denim, so might be hard to sew through.

I've used old woolen blankets I pick up at garage sales, with holes in them, for batting. I just cut around the hole and piece the batting.

I'm not a seamstress, nor did I have a clue what I was doing, but I made a t-shirt quilt several years ago using all the soccer t-shirts my daughter had collected over the years. I cut 11" or 12" squares (I think that was the size) from the front of each t-shirt and then backed each square with lightweight fusing to help the square hold it's shape. I'll have to look for a picture tonight to help me remember if I outlined each t-shirt with a strip of material and how I made the rows.

I haven't seen the quilt for a few years, as it is in my daughters car and goes with her everywhere. It hold quite a few memories for her with all the travelling her team did.

If you tell me how to post or where to post a picture, I will.

    Good Luck
