    Default My Denim Scrap Haul!!!!!!

I made out like a bandit on this one & I just have to share
In my previous post I had shared some info about what Goodwill does with its cast off blue jeans (& everything else they don't sell). They bale up the clothing(1000lb. bales) to either sell to other companies or they make rags out of them & sell them. Anyway, the top guy that works there, told me that he would save me all of the blue jeans that he could & sell them to me for .26 cents a pound....
when I went to pick up my "quilt scraps" I was in for a surprise...there was 243 lbs of the stuff waiting for me! I wasn't expecting soooo much.
I hauled the stuff home and spend a few wonderful hours going through all of it.I cannot believe that after only 5 weeks on the racks-if the items don't sell, they get rid of them...and its perfectly good stuff. For my family, I found within this mountain of blue....a pr of jeans for ds#4,2 prs for dd#3,1 pr for dh & a denim shirt for me.
Then....there was the pile of denim articles(skirts/shirts& jeans)that I could not use b/c it was too thin for my quilts or it was the stretchy type...I had 3 huge garbage bags that I gave to a transition house and 10 pairs of little boys jeans to another family.....and I still have 5 huge boxes left - there must be at least a 100 pair left over! My hands are going to be so sore after I glean the material for quilting scraps.lol.
    Not bad for $68(inc. tax)

Ooops, forgot to add that the guy from Goodwill is saving all of the yarn that he can for me for when I stop by next time. Being that yarn isn't as heavy as denim, I'm beginning to wonder what a "yarn haul" will look like at .26 a lb.

One of our Goodwills has a Bargain Barn, where they sell the clothes by the pound. I see how much stuff they actually toss out in the dumpster every day, and it makes me sick!

Boy! I wish I knew what our Goodwill does with their leftovers. There's a local company that specializes in recycling old clothes for sale overseas so they probably get the best of it.

Wow! That is a good haul! Our goodwill turns unsold clothes into rags for industrial use. I have more than I can keep up with just recycling family clothes.

~I'll be the naysayer here because I don't think denim by the pound is a good bargain. I just took 1 pair of each my husband's, mine and the kids jeans and weighed them together. They were 4lbs3oz. At $.26 a pound I'd have paid $1.09 for those 4 pair. Denim is so heavy that asking for it on Freecycle or picking it up at a yard sale(I can get things for $.10 per article) is a better value, I think. If I'm gonna go to the trouble to redeem and recycle I want the material to be free or almost free. Not everybody has my 'sources' ,though, I guess.~

A fantastic deal. Sure would like for some type of business like that up here on the mountain. In order to get to the closest Goodwill its a 43 mile down the mountain.

Your gonna make somebody warm with all that denim. Great job.

We have a Goodwill, a Salvation Army and a thrift store run by the Baptists. The Baptist one will give away the clothes that don't sell for FREE.
