Accepting God’s Help
I sought the Lord, and he answered me, and delivered me from all
my fears. (Psalm 34:4)

Her short curly pigtails bounded along her shoulders as the
little sandy-haired girl in a bright yellow swimsuit skipped toward the
ocean. Following her father, she became so focused on him that she
remained oblivious to the sea until a wave roared around her. Suddenly she halted, crying, “Daddy!” In response to her plea, the tall young man turned around and scooped her up into the safety of his strong arms.

As my morning stroll along the shoreline carried me past them, I
thought of the carefree and happy times I have spent following my
heavenly Father. And I also remembered a time when unexpected circumstances, like the waves around the little girl, produced fear in me. Referred to the hospital for medical tests, I planned to go alone. A friend of mine telephoned the night before, offering companionship. Stubbornly I refused the help, but she repeated the offer several times during the course of our conversation.

Suddenly I realized that this is the way God helps us. If we
refuse his assistance, we are the fools. Abruptly, I replied, “Yes, I would like you to go with me.” We arranged for her to be at my home in the morning. The test was much more stressful than I had ever anticipated, and I was truly grateful for her company that day.

Action Step
When unexpected waves of uncertainty lap around us, God extends
his hand to us in many ways. Are we willing to humbly accept his help?
