Interesting thrift store experience
My oldest dd hasn't been able to find her MCR t-shirt for MONTHS. She's looked everywhere. I don't have it, her sister swears she doesn't have it, etc. Still can't find it. It was a rather expensive t-shirt as she had to buy it online to find the one she wanted as they weren't sold around here.
About a month ago, youngest dd went through her dressers getting rid of clothes she doesn't like/wear anymore. I asked her, did you look for your sister's t-shirt while you went through them? "Yes mom, it's not there". I take the bags of clothes to the Salvation Army for donation.
Today dh & I stopped by SA on the way home from Christmas shopping (you see where this is going?). Thankfully I always check the black t-shirts (find great deals on band t-shirts for the girls there) and lo & behold what do I find? Oldest dd's MCR t-shirt!! I was HOT! What are the chances that someone else also purchased this very expensive (new style) t-shirt in the same size as dd's missing t-shirt then donated it to the SA? Not bloody likely!! So I had to buy the damn thing back and youngest dd owes me $2

At least you found it. Earlier this year my dd's favorite stuffed animal, a dog, disappeared and despite our tearing the house apart in search of it, it never reappeared. Not long before she discovered it missing, I tidied up the house and also purged a bunch of stuff. I knew it was her favorite, and would NEVER have given it away on purpose, but I think it must have ended up in the 'donate' bag instead of the 'carry upstairs and put away where it belongs' bag
She was not happy, but eventually found a really cute, small stuffed puppy on sale at Joann's that she liked so I bought it for her.

glad you found it, sorry it cost you! Ugh. Could you make your dd apologize to her older sibling??

that sounds like something that would happen at my house.....Paige, my college kid, called upset because she couldn't find a pair of jeans, accusing her sister of taking them, then a few days later called again saying now a shirt was missing, same thing, blaming Abbie, then keeps griping about it....comes home for the weekend and Lo and behold, they are in a bag in her room.....duh.....but it is always her sisters' fault......
