I don't go very often mostly in the summer but my daughter goes every week.Since her house burned last summer she's found almost everything to furnish the one she lives in now for 20 cents or free. She also gets about all the kids clothes at them.

Hi there. I have SIX thrift stores in my little town and I just moved overseas and into a bachelor pad. We'll just say that I make my rounds every week or two, but I usually don't come home with too much... just things we will use.

thrifting is just a part of my every other week shopping trip. I get paid every other week and I go get groceries, home & pet items.... and plan a stop at my favorite thrift store as well. With 3 of our 6 kids blessing us with 3 grandbabies in just over a year... I'm always on the lookout for baby clothes & good toys. bought a very nice umbrella stroller yesterday that has a canopy and basket behind it for only $3.

We have 2 goodwills and 1 thrift store that I frequent. It used to be there was never a time that you could walk in there and not come out with a big haul. Now, as the recession has hit this area hard, most weeks you'd be hard pressed to find an item or 2 that was worth the buy. I try to go every week to at least 1 of them and see what's out there. If you go just when you need something you'll never get anything. One thing I've learned if you see something you may want put it in your cart while you are thinking about it, because if you don't by the time you decide you want it it's gone. I also have a thrift store budget, it's easy to keep since most times it just rolls over into the following week. I set aside enough money for 1 shirt (if I can) and I just keep rolling it over, eventually I'll run into a few shirts or a pair of pants or shoes and since I had rolled the budget over I can get them all at once.
Still, I'm clothing a family of 4. A budget of 1 shirt a week does not go too far around here. I keep hearing about these thrift stores where the prices are 25 cents and 50 cents like a rummage sale. Goodwills are high out this way. The thrift store one around here is $1 a piece of clothing. This store is the store of all the clothing they could not sell at the other stores, I have yet to find any clothing there. But I did buy towels for 50 cents each once!!! They had a half price linens sale.Last edited by pollypurebred39; 02-19-2009 at 10:17 PM.

We have one Goodwill and a Salvation Army in town. The Salvation Army is extremely expensive. I saw a winter jacket in there, nothing special, for $39.00!!! I could buy a new one at Walmart for $40.00! Our Goodwill is well price but I find the clothing is expensive. Shirts are $3.99, pants $4.99. I usually go more for the odds and ends, glassware and gifts I can get there. They seem to be really cheap. I try to go once a week. Would love to go more but we usually only go in town once a week and it isn't worth the gas just to run there.

I have a lot of Goodwills and various thrift stores in my area. I only go serious shopping when I need to freshen my wardrobe for work. That's about 2-3 times a year. I find a lot of high-end items, which I adore and I won't spend retail for. Then I go when I need a 'fix'. That's about 10 times a year. I'll stop for 10 minutes, run in and search the housewares and linens. If I find something, OK. If not, I'm outta there. It works for me.

When my kids were little I went once a week but that was many many years ago. I went for the first time in about 9 months yesterday. I need work jeans and I buy mine at Goodwill. I quit going mostly because I always found something wether I needed it or not. Too easy to find something for nothing and I'm trying to get ready to move out of this place this summer so the less I bring home the better.

that's the problem with thrift stores...they can be so full of GOOD deals that you end up with more than you expected....and you just CANT leave any of the good stuff behind.....

I tend to go when I'm in the town where my fav. thrift shop is. That works out to be about twice a month usually. But since my operation and I'm not driving, I have only been once in the past month (and not to that store, it's not open on weekends much.)

I go about once a month. I usually go to find kids jeans, capris, or things for the house. I LOVE baskets, the really well made ones, but can't afford the expensive prices. I always get good deals when I'm there. I just got 2 very nice ones today that normally would cost me about $40.00 retail for just $5. I also got a nice pot for my plants for $2.95. I LOVE pots and we are redoing our backyard area and that just will help so much.

I only go if there is something specific I am hunting for. Like last weekend...we were down to only 2 useable kitchen towels and I needed more but I didn't want to pay $3.99 or more each at the regular store. So I stopped in at Goodwill and bought 4 for 99 cents each. All in excellent shape and cute too.

I have a favorite one that I go to once a week. They have a man who handles the books and he only works on Wednesday. The other days books don't get put out. He knows what I like and he'll go look in the back and bring out books I may be interested in. They sell their paperbacks for 25 cents and hardbacks for 50 cents.
