Default Costume finds at thrift store

Today I went looking for old clothes, fabric, etc. to make costumes for a school project for my students. I teach special ed, and there are a few students whom I know their families do not have the resources to make costumes for this project.

One was a civil war nurse costume. I got a black jumper which will reach the floor on a 6th grader. I paired this with a white blouse underneath with a brooch fastened at the collar. I'm also going to make an apron out of a white pillowcase.

The 2nd was Sacagawea. I bought a knit skirt & t-shirt and cut fringes around the hems. I will thread the fringe through beads.

Last, was Sgt. York-WWI. I found a green men's shirt with the little shoulder flaps on it--yay! I also found a real army hat from who knows when--may even be WWI--the kind that folds up into a rectangle. It is so awesome! On the shirt, I created some medals using little plastic olympic-type medals with ribbons attached.

Overall, I spent $11. I will keep the costumes for next year, and probably add to this collection.

    I'm so excited!

Great finds, and a really nice thing for you to do for the students & their families. I'm sure they'll really appreciate it.
