Default My day at "dollar day" at the thrift store -the good and the bad -lesson learned

So I went by myself to dollar day (all clothing was a dollar each) Total $6 plus tax.

I found myself some things I had had my need list That was good!

You had to wait in line to try on stuff and could only try on 6 things at a time. That was okay. Had some nice conversations while I waited.

    I bought me
    1) Christopher and Banks khaki shorts
    2) Khaki pants (short/) just like a need ( I have been trying on every Khaki pant for months at thrift stores and retail. Finally found the perfect pair today.
    3) Cato knit shirt "girly" detail and pink
    4) Cato button up stripe shirt with a Khaki colorbase ( looks nice with the shorts and pants)

    For my son
A down filled vest - In Navy color. He wanted one like his dad's. Been looking for one for a while. We just missed the last one at a sale. Son was sad.
So I was "tickled pink" when I found this one! He has loved this one. Hasn't taken it off since I have returned home. Sadly it is a bit small for him . That is the bad

I also felt that my daughter would fell left out without something for her ( she had wanted to go but I said no) so I found a spring summer Gap shirt in pink . It is to small too. Maybe she can wear it once or twice. Maybe

The children are growing so fast that I can't judge size very well any more. No more clothing shopping for the children without them being there. To hard to guess their size and they are getting their own sense of style now that they are older.

    Lesson learned.

I think you did good! I know the pain of buying clothes the kids don't like/want/fit and actually, the pickiness factor has ended up saving us more cash because I am not buying without trying on anymore. And if DD doesn't LOVE it then she won't wear it as much so unless it's a need, I don't buy it.

i'm w/ you handy mom...dd is SOOOOO picky! i ask repeatedly, are you sure you will wear it. if she doesnt answer w/ sheer gusto, it gets put back.

imagine - you did get some great deals. i have never seen clothing at a $$$ store. interesting.

christopher banks - thats a deal! although i am not a huge fan of the store, it is still a good deal!

in regards to the Down vests...have you checked online at ll bean and lands end? you can usually get great deals on down vests at the end of the season or on colors they no longer carry. i got one a few yrs back (black w/ bright blue on the inside) that is probably about 7 yrs old and i still wear it! warm and best of all, it was on clearance for maybe $12 or so. cant even remember as it is sooo old! but definitely try online. i just got one of the clearance catalogs via mail (dont remember which had them) but they are now on sale.

I look at it this way... the vest and the shirt were $1 each.

Your son LOVES it, even if it is a bit small, $1 brought so much happiness to him, even for a short amount of time.

Your daughter may not be able to wear the shirt for long, even if she wears it once, she knows Mom thought about her.

So... sizes aside, you spent $2 and call it 'the bad'... $2 is the price of coffee!! You got to spend some alone time, relaxed a bit in a busy environment and you got some fantastic items.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

    LV about sums it up.

At least it wasn't something super expensive. Find a friend of the kids that it will fit and give it to them.

Yes, the one we missed out on was in a combo four in one at Landsend. He specifically wants a Navy color one like Dad's.

I have decided that the $1 down vest can tied him over. I have decided that it was a blessing that we missed out on the deal at Lands End. Son should be about ready for the teenage growth spurt. My friend pointed out that her son grew 7 inches one summer. So although it pains me not to have a coat ready in storage for him I will wait. And who knows what he might like in a year from now. Teenagers change so fast.

Oh and the down vest was at the Thrift store, Goodwill on a special day they were having called Dollar Day.

We don't have dollar stores ( where everything is a dollar) where I live.

What a wonderful way to look at it. Thanks for putting it in perspective.

About a the price of a candy bar.
And he has already received more joy from it.

And the shirt pacified Little Miss and made her feel thought of. About the same reason one buys a candy bar for a child at the checkout.

Already have the boy picked out. I think he is going to love it too.

Just have to wait for Son to decided that it doesn't fit him. LOL

If I go to look for clothes for the boys, I measure them up before I leave, write it down and make sure it gets in my purse (because getting to the store and realizing you didn't sucks), and I make sure to tuck in the tape measure also.

I then measure up the clothes before I buy them.

Side note: For shorts, I measure from their waist to their knee to make sure the shorts are long enough. My guys don't like short shorts. It took me a while to figure out how to get shorts the correct length.

I generally do this but didn't that day.
It is the waist that we have a hard time fitting normally.

It sounds like you did really good. I need to start making a list for the coming summer.
