Spending Irony
This morning I went to a rumamge sale. For $7.50 I bought a really nice pair of dress pants, a dress, and two shirts (one of the shirts still had the store tags on it, and it was priced at $28).
Then I went to buy cards for my aunt and uncle who are both hospitalized right now...the TWO CARDS cost me $8.89!!
I am going to look for card-making supplies on sale in future...that's ridiculous!!!BEF: $$120/$1000

~Isn't the price of cards crazy? Just paper!
Card making is fast and fun. I used to struggle a bit coming up with a saying for the inside but the I realized that my own thoughts, even if it was just a simple "Happy Birthday" or "Hope you feel better soon" was actually the best thing.
If you have a Michael's near you, you can get big packs of blank cards there and use one of their 40% off coupons.
Fabulous deals on the clothes, btw!

It's not like I wouldn't spend the money on my sick family members, but it's a ridiculous price for something so momentary in its impact. I am definitely going to start making my own!
Still, they are overseas, and it's not even like I could phone instead, because he's completely deaf and she's just had a stroke, so cards it is!BEF: $$120/$1000

I often find unused cards at the thrift stores.
One thrift store is hit-or-miss, but once I found about a dozen elegant fairy-design cards for about $2.50 total. They had to be $3 or $4 apiece brand new. I used those for niece's birthdays that year.
The other thrift store often has their 'nicer' cards marked $0.25 apiece. The free-from-charity cards (American Heart Ass'n, for ex) are $0.10 apiece.
I found 4 nice Valentine's cards there this year -- one for mil, one for DH, and one for each kid. All for $1.2012 Knitting in progress

I agree, cards are ridiculously priced. I too have started making my own or try to find them at thrift stores/Goodwill. Everyone seems to like the homemade ones the best.

The last time I was in the Dollar Tree, I noticed they had all kinds of cards 2 for $1. Home-Made really are the nicest, and no doubt a fun craft too, but if you're printing off your computer, that can get costly too.
Here's a couple of sites that look neat for making cards w/o computer printing >>>

Yup, I was going to plug Dollar Tree, too. They have a pretty good selection, and all are only 50 cents. I found out my parents and good friend shop for their cards there, too.
At that price it's easy to stock up for all occasions.

Dollar General & Family Dollar also has card for .50 & $1 each. Hallmark also has a $1 section of cards. They're sort of simple designs, but often work fine for kids or "Think of You". Cards can be really pricey & I feel the less expensive ones are just as nice. The handmade ones are the BEST though!

I usually go to Dollarama Plus here to get the whole crafty artsy looking cards. They're usually on a spinny rack by the cash or in the card aisle but they're on a display b/c they're more special looking vs the run of the mill everyday $1 card.
I tend to not give cards in general.2012: The Year Of The Purge!

Sometimes Costco has a box of really interesting cards that work out to be less than a dollar each - plus they are for all different occasions. Would love to learn to make my own cards too!!
Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

Love making my own cards. I make a lot of them with no sentiment in them and then I can use them for what ever I need them for. Obviously not birthday cards though. Those I make a variety of some more feminine, kids, and so on.

It's very nice of you to buy those cards after having such a frugal purchase. I'm sure it was money well spent for your family.

Cards are extremely overpriced, especially now with the music playing cards...your $20 gift just turned into a $30 gift after buying a card and wrapping materials!!
I like the 50 cent and one dollar cards that Walmart has. Also, dollar tree has great cards 2/$1.00.
