Salt and Pepper Shaker collections
Okay, I have no clue where to put my question, but am hoping this forum might be okay.
A garage sale close to us was today. Also tomorrow. I did not go to it till late this afternoon. One of the things they have is a LARGE collection of salt and pepper shakers. I did buy a few today. I got the chicken, rooster, and egg ones. I did pick up 3 vintage sets that is a hen sitting with 2 shakers and her tail is a napkin holder. Never seen them before till today. I am thinking about going back tomorrow and buying a good number more for resale.
Do people still collect salt and pepper shakers today ?
Anything in particuler I should be looking for ?

Vintage is IN !
You'd be amazed at the amount of 'vintage repro' stuff being bought, actual vintage goes for so much more.

I collect salt cellars - those little cut glass/crystal containers for salt at each place setting. I even have a few of the silver tiny pepper shakers and some tiny spoons for the salt. Hardly ever see these anymore!!
Think you should do well with your shaker finds!!Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

I don't know much about them, but considering there's always lots of sets for sale in probably every souvenier shop I've ever been to, my guess is there's a definite demand for them. I've seen a collection that took up a whole kitchen wall. It made for some good conversation, and really catches your eye too.
Sounds like you got some cute ones. Let us know if you go back and get some more.

Update....
Well in case you didn't figure it out....yes.......I went back to the sale this morning. It started at 8. I was there at 7:30.
I made a deal for all the shakers they had left. They are in about 6 boxes on the back of my pickup right now. I guess I should have went to this sale early yesterday but I found a community one, that had my attention.
Well the best part of this story is....I am buying the rest of the collection. This was kind of the tip of the iceberg at this sale. But I can't get my hands on them till next weekend. I am buying them sight unseen, boxed up. The lady who had them passed away and the house had to be emptied, and things put into storage.
So if you collect shakers ....all I can say is....you might want to check my user id on ebay....the same one I use to post here......and check them out. I will start listing them tomorrow. Most I will start at 99 cents.
No way can I keep them all. I think the woman had more than 1000 sets. Maybe more. I bought maybe 200 sets this morning.
I am however keeping the chicken ones for me...............

I just rough counted them............
over 260 sets..........thud .........
and she is supposed to be calling me about the balance of them next saturday...........I am guessing maybe 2000 pairs from her description....not sure if she knows how many...
I hope to get a photo album up tomorrow here for a few I am keeping for me. A few others I want to keep but would be better off selling them. Some are just TOO cute.
One is the man and the moon. Another is a pepper can and a salt store container ( cermanic ). Then there is a bunch of differant animals ones, vegtables, flowers, etc.
Think retro kitchen....vintage
I think I just found something to keep me out of mischief for the rest of the summer........

How neat, you buy them at a great price too? I think you'll have no problem selling most of them, wishing you lots of fun with them.
I have one pair of s&p shakers from dh's gma. His Mom gave them to me & I think they belonged to her mother who was a missionary and concert pianist over in Japan many years ago and brought them home with her before my mil (86) was born. They really are so sweet, an older man & woman, I'll take a pic and put them in my fv "simple smiles" gallery.Last edited by Darlene; 05-15-2010 at 08:08 PM.

Okay....here is the photo album of the ones I am keeping.
saltpepperchickens
Each picture can be enlarged. My camera takes poor pictures inside but great pictures outside. But for a 11 yr old camera, I can't complain.
I almost don't want to tell you all what I paid for these shakers.
I spent $ 5 yesterday on the ones I bought for me. The ones in the photo album. We guesstimated the amount I bought today for numbers. I paid for 200 sets and there is roughly 260 sets actual.

Okay, here is the start of the album of the ones I am going to sell. I just think this first group is way TOO cute.
I really like the ones that are piggy backing. I don't know the proper name for them.

Again, each picture can be enlarged.
I will take pictures outside tomorrow. The natural light is best.

Again, too darn cute! Collecting these shakers is a world wide craze. Here's a link to a collectors club that has all kinds of information (definitions are esp. helpful)to help you really know your "product". Wait til you see all the collections for sale, oh my!Novelty Salt and Pepper Shakers Club
