    Default GREAT accidental find

My birthday was this past weekend, I have a Goodwill card entitling me to 25% off my total purchase for the day, so my friend and I went shopping there. I spent $6.17 after discount (some crazy shopping spree, eh?)on a raincoat for my girl, a cup for her, and a gold tone necklace I needed to replace a chain that broke on a pendant my father bought me as a child when he went to Hong Kong on business.

The chain was in the 'pile' of costume jewelry the sell for $1.99 a piece, so I got it for $1.50 after discount. It had teeny tiny markings no one can read with a naked eye. Got it home under a magnifying glass- it's Italian 14 kt gold, thin necklace, about 20 inches long.

14 kt gold for $1.50! I plan to possibly sell it, depending on what I can get for it...if I can make $30-50 off it, off it goes. I bought it thinking it was a really nice 'gold tone' chain anyways, so no loss to me. Have to think about what my minimum price for it would be though to make it worth reselling over having a real gold chain so cheaply! There was a second chain in the case I saw later on but did not look at in hand....too bad the shop's not local, otherwise I'd be back to see if that might be real gold too!

What a birthday find for me! Lucky me Goodwill 'missed' it was real gold- they have a second case of 'real' silver, gold and gemstone jewelry with much higher prices.

I so don't want to say this, but ........

The stamp isn't regulated at all and anyone can put that on anything including plating or just gold tone. (fell for it from a "buddy" selling a chain years ago)

If it was mine, I would take it to a pawn shop and see what they will give you for it. Before they offer you anything they will test it and then you will know for sure. They will also weigh it and then you can get a better idea of its value.

Either way, $1.50 for a necklace you can wear or for real gold is still a good deal.

    HAPPY BITHDAY!!

Joe- I am aware of fakes...considering bringing it into the next 'gold buyers' day at local consignment shop to have it tested out of curiosity, and to see what they would offer. Looks real, high quality, but I'm no jeweler! Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!
