Oh, man, I have to stay out of that place!
A new Goodwill store opened in our little town yesterday. Previously, the nearest secondhand store was fifty miles from us, so we didn't get there that often. Which is a good thing, really.
So of course we had to blow a gallon of gas and run into town today to check the place out. I've recently taken up knitting and have a sweater in mind I want to knit. Among other projects.
I found a bonanza in yarn! Four huge bags in all, plus a big bag of sewing thread which included a nice big pin cushion. The one bag of yarn had two colors of yarn that I thought would make the sweater, plus some other yarn. I thought there were three skeins of one color and four of the other, enough for the sweater. When I got home and opened the bag, I found seven skeins of the one color and five of the other! So I should be able to get the sweater out of one color. There were also three skeins of white in that bag, plus some partial skeins. All for five bucks!
One bag had three full skeins and one partial skein of faux mohair yarn, and a scarf about four feet long made from the same yarn. I'll probably rip that up and make something else. Ideas abound!
The other bags had fewer skeins in them, but were still very worthwhile. I paid about $20 for everything we bought. We counted up all the skeins when we got home and did the math. Not counting the cost of the bag of thread or the partial skeins of yarn, the average cost of all the full skeins I got was only .39/skein! I consider all the partial skeins a nice bonus!
I'm going to be so busy this winter.
I'm going to have to stay away from Goodwill if they continue having deals like these, or my house is going to be full of UFOs, worse than it is now. But it sure was fun! Especially since I had just come from a store where I bought a single skein of yarn for $3.30. Huge difference!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

We have several used clothing stores really, really close; but I never seem to find yarn in more than 1 or 2 skeins.

WOW! I do believe that you hit the mother lode. Way to go on all of the yarn.

With bargains like that you can go back once in a while
I can't remember the last time I bought anything brand new! Guilt free shopping.

It isn't that we don't like the bargains, we just don't need anything. Plus we're trying to purge, not add. But the more we go there, the more we'll find irresistible deals. So we'll have to be careful.
We're really glad to finally have a secondhand store though.

That is a good find! I am trying to be more careful and only buy things I truly need or can gift to someone else who needs it. It can be hard to stay away from thrift stores!

Thiftstores are great places to purchase yarn. I am currently working on some of the yarn I have purchased. You really did get some great deals.
Almost went to the thriftstore yesterday but was able to talk myself out of it. Yup, plan on going to the mall and check out the clearance sales.

DC, talk to the manager at your GW. Maybe if people express an interest in getting more yarn, they can send more from Duluth.
I played with yarn all day today. I found two full skeins and two partial skeins, all different but all variegated. Each of the full ones will coordinate with the two partials to make slippers, so I can get started on those for the Ships Project stuff I hope to get done this fall.
I decided to take the plunge and drilled holes in the lids of two square plastic canisters I've had laying around the house. Two skeins of yarn fit nicely in them and now I have two really nice yarn jars. They also fit nicely into the bag I'm going to convert to a knitting bag. Lucky me, I hadn't gotten around to donate them yet. (I wish the same could be said for the beautiful set of interchangeable circular needles I used to have, the ones I paid $1 for and will probably have to spend at least $50 to replace.
) I was planning to do the pop bottle thing for knitting, but the canisters are so much nicer. I try to avoid storing food in plastic, so it only seemed logical to drill holes in the lids and use them for a non-food use.
