Out here, we refer to those types of people (who whine about how change will affect them, but never think about the greater good) as NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) and it's never a compliment.

What a strange cause to get behind. Life is too short!

Reminds me of when they were extending the Light Rail up to Hunt Valley mall and all the local wealthy types were screaming about how inner city criminals would just hop the light rail to come rob them...

Which never manifested (the criminals hopping the rail - the rail station was built)

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Holy wow! Thank you for sharing this story. People who talk like that live an inflated life style provided by credit. When the credit runs out or bankruptcy looms they may have to shop at a second hand store, Oh the horrors!

I have been in thrift stores in affluent neighborhoods (Severna Park) and in "lower class" neighborhoods (Balto. City on Patapsco Ave.). I have never been bothered by anyone. Honestly, the people in the so called "lower class" neighborhood actually talked to me.

I would love to have a thrift store on my street. It would save me from having to waste gas and fight for a parking space. I would just walk! Even if I was rich I would never stop shopping at thrift stores.

When i was a kid less then 10 years old and im now 43 my parents use to take me there. I loved it and we lived in a very nice area in Southern California. Now the city we lived and the store is in has gotten bad.
Now living in the midwest i was upset because we have what they call mission marts and the ones they have are in a really bad area i refuse to go to. Even with hubby and during the the day time. Sad but its true. For the most part the thrifts around here are in the city in the middle of good and bad areas. But there are a few that bring in some really bad people. One if the goodwills i love is in a great up scale area, you can find lots of nice name brand items, antiques. But some of the people that go there are the ones that do come from the south end of town which is 15 miles away and most not All have no respect for anyone. They have no issues removing something from your cart if they like it and you don't dare say a thing because of the threat of them carrying a gun or hurting you.

The thrift stores in bad neighborhoods are not the cause of the bad neighborhoods, they just happen to be there.

When we lived in Minneapolis, we went to some bad neighborhoods to shop at SA and GW. Then again, we lived in a bad neighborhood so maybe we were used to it. But we were never bothered by anyone, either.

I totally agreed. These are the same people who will tell you they got their clothing at a department store, and shop at the local Goodwill or thrift. Who knows where anybody shop unless you tell them?

And just where are the rich people supposed to go then to find their 'heirloom pieces' for house and garden and other 'antiques', and marked down designer clothing?

And speaking from experience, I'm from a little town where the 'upper class' never goes to our local thrift shop (they wouldn't be caught dead there, because some of their friends might see them), but they will drive to the city which is 30 miles away, and spend the whole day in the 4 thrift shops there, looking, trying on and buying. One senior adult I know goes right over to the thrift shop toy section, and plays with the toys there, a jack-in-the-box kept her interest for about 15 minutes.

Funny thing is that I sure do see a heck of a lot of Mercedes Benz, BMW, Acura and Audi cars parked in the parking lots of many "second hand stores".

Maybe they are afraid they will have to compete for all those great second hand goods deals?

Ya gotta love them though. They're the ones who buy the expensive stuff retail and then donate it so us riffraff can get it at the thrift.

We don't want everyone to discover thrift shopping! Less for us.

Mom to 5: Mind if I borrow that line about the IQ of a dead flea?
I know of a few situations where it would work really well.

and I agree about their neighbors might see them.

This just makes me so angry!
Just because I live on a low fixed income does not make me low class, criminal, bum or an undesirable!!!!!!
I would match my morals against some of those so called "upper class" people any day.
Sorry for the vent but remarks like those hurt my feelings!
    God bless,

    Smile Secondhandmom.com feels bad

I really pity them. They miss out on so much satisfaction by getting a good deal and value for their money. I love goodwill.
