unexpected gift...

when my neighbor lady fled her abusive bf, she gave me her plants. I was having trouble keeping two alive so i re-homed them. Under one of the plants was a metal tray. It's heavy, but not like iron or lead certainly. It might be silver, I don't know. It had alot of calcium build up from being under a plant for so long, as you could imagine. I had forgotten to give it with the plant when i gave it up. So today I cleaned it up with a calcium remover, and it is kinda pretty. No design or anythign. Looking like it might have been a charger for under a plate, but thicker, more substantial. And it has weird markings on the back of it.

My question is, how do I find out what it is I have sitting in front of me? How do i go about finding it's value? Anyone have an online source they know of?
