Talking I found a hidden treasure!

Yesterday I was going through the boxes in the garage for the garage sale and found a box I haven't looked in since about 1980. In it was my 5 year diary for the years 1968 thru 1972! I was 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 through out those years.

I looked through it awhile then called my Mom, lol. I read her excerts and we talked for nearly 3 hours! We are so excited because the diary is like a family history.

It had the births of my brother and sister and the day Mom told us she was pregnant and when she made her maternity dresses. It had things like when we got a new horse and what we named it. When the neighbors and my aunts and uncles passed away and when a great aunt visited and when some of my grandparents passed away. It had a history of when Dad would leave out on the truck and when he would come back home and when we would go fishing and camping and what each of us 5 girls did on our birthdays and what I got for Christmas every year. Lots of times I listed how much money I had and what I did with my money and when I would babysit and how much I would make. One day I babysat for a family of 3 kids for nearly 12 hours and I made $5.00 and I was thrilled, lol!

Mom and I decided I would write out a copy on the computer of each day for the 5 years and give each one of my sisters a copy of it leaving space on each day for them to add any events or things that they and Mom remembered and possibly adding any years but Mom thinks I'm the only one out of all of us that kept a diary. I would just copy each page on the scanner but nearly every page and date I talk about some boy and how I'm in love with him, lol. I sure was boy crazy!

I just wanted to share the wonderfull treasure I found.
Did anyone else keep a diary when they were young?

How neat! That's great that you're sharing them with your family, too.

I've tossed all my childhood diaries and journals. I suppose I may regret that someday but for now I think I made the right decision. I tended to write only when I was angry anyway and that would not be a fair representation of those years.

How fun!!! That is truly a treasure. I did not keep any of my diaries but now that I am older I wish I had. There are so many childhood memories that are fading away.

I was fortunate to have my great grandmother's diaries passed down to me, they date from 1904 to 1972 and are among my most cherished possessions. They cover her life from the time she was in her senior year of highschool until the last years of her life. It is amazing how well I know and understand a woman I never actually even met. Hang on to that diary, it truly is a treasure!
