Default Been doing lots of thrift store shopping lately

As you all know, Gripey and I have lost a significant amount of weight lately. We've done it the old fashioned way (diet and exercise....no pills, no surgeries, very frugal) BUT it's still very expensive to start from the ground up on the wardrobe for TWO people at the same time. Sssooooo, even though Gripey has an aversion I've been doing a lot of thrifting for my new threads. We've done well hitting sales and clearance racks for him and he's well dressed in brand new clothes. But I just jump with joy these days when I open my closet. It's full of fall and winter clothes that I love. Most of them are name brand items, many more things that I've ever had before. I have some dressy things, some casual dressy things and lots of casual things. I'm home most of the time so I don't need a closet full of business suits but if I did I could buy them for pennies on the dollar and buy name brand items to boot. Unless you have a major aversion be sure to check out those thrift stores....you'll be surprised if you really dig through the clothing. Oh, and find out what days those sales are on too.

~48 yr. old sahw, livin' it up in our empty nest, smack dab in the middle of everywhere.~

Lisa, congratulations on yours and Gripeys weight loss, that is wonderful. You are right, it is so fun to look in your closet and know that you have a stylish trendy wardrobe and that you paid pennies on the dollar for it.

I'm in the same boat -- I've lost about ten pounds in the last year and I'm in desperate need of some nice winter clothes. When we get paid next Thursday, I'm headed right to the thrift store and get some shopping done!

Congrats on the weight loss!!! I know from experience that it's not an easy task.

I think that second hand stores are an excellent place to renew your skinny-sized wardrobe and a good place to get rid of the old bigger sized wardrobe. You can get gently used brand name clothing for a fraction of the price of retail stores. I have worn hand-me-downs and second hand store clothing all of my life. The only thing I won't wear second hand is lingerie, bras and panties although I have a few friends that will (EEEWWW).

Just a few hints for those not used to shopping second hand stores ...
    1. Find out from store staff when they put out the most merchandise and shop those days (usually midweek). Most of the time they do not put out new on the weekend and it's been picked over weekend days.
    2. Thoroughly inspect items. Check buttons, snaps, zippers, straps, etc. Some can be fixed easily, others cannot.
    3. Used 'ugly' clothing but can have really neat buttons, fasteners or straps to be used on other clothes at a fraction of the cost of retail so don't automatically overlook the 'ugly' clothes.
