downsizing MIL
I too have in-laws that are downsizing. They dont want to have an estate sale or even a yard sale. They dont want strangers or neighbors looking through their stuff. So they have been giving away items to family. I have 4 sil, they dont really want anything, ezxcept for items that are sentimental as they live scattered across the country. So far they have given me, a complete service for 12 mikasa china service. A complete service for 12 gold flatware service. Assorted vintage xmas decorations from the 1960's. My ds21 is going to recieve a like new livingroom set, and bedroom furniture for his apartment. My question is that my mil brings things she thinks that we may want, everytime she visits us or we visit her, which is about once a week. There are a few smaller items asside from what I mentioned I kept, but most of it is things that my dh and I just dont want. Mostly because it is very dated, or doesnt go with the decor of our home. My cheap side says I should take it all and the sell it. Our home is small and we do not have the storage space. Since yardsaling weather is over around here. Any suggestions of how to refuse items without hurting anyone feelings?

Ask her if you might be able to come over and 'shop' through the things that she wants to give away. You can take what you want, leave what you don't. Tell her that you don't 'want to be greedy' when you're leaving the stuff you don't want
.... . You want to leave some stuff for the rest of the family. I think she would appreciate that.

As I have been clearing out grandmas place I have run into the same problem. I've just freecycled the items and those that didn't go that way I took over to a Sr. Center whos going to use them for Bingo Prizes. A whole box of figurires went this way. They were thrilled to have free prizes and I was glad to see them go.
