The Dump-n-Run Adventure
So today was the day of our local university's annual Dump-n-Run, where the students leave items they can't or aren't willing to take back home with them and the university Student Council sells them off, keeping any money they raise for next year's student council. Anything not sold is donated to charity. So it's a win-win situation (except for the poor parents who buy the stuff for their students in the first place -- NOTE: Any parent here who is sending their child to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia: DON'T pay full price for ANYTHING for your student.)
So here are our findings:
~ Swiffer Wet Jet, batteries still working -- $1 (worth $25)
~ 7 rolls of wrapping paper -- $1
~ 1 sound card for the computer -- $5
~ 1 yogurt maker with nine jars (1 with missing lid) -- $4
~ 1 video tape rewinder (the rewind on our VCR doesn't work properly) -- $2
~ 1 vegetable slicer -- $3
~ 1 bread knife -- $1
~ 3 cast iron frying pans, various sizes, one La Creuset -- $3
~ 1 pastry board scraper -- $2
~ 2 heavy-duty stock pots (1 is restaurant quality,
estimates it's worth at least $40) -- $4
~ 2 spring form pans -- $4
~ 1 Canon camera (not digital) -- $8
Total: $38.00
I also donated $0.50 and bought a chocolate macaroon from a table outside they gym to contribute to the MS Society of Nova Scotia.
So all in all, a good trip was had. We went early and got the best stuff for regular price, but we'll going to back around 2 p.m., two hours before it closes, and see if there are any great deals on anything. Last year I stayed til nearly closing and ended up stuffing a garbage bag full of clothes for $5. I ended up with about 50 items, making my clothes $0.10 each. So we're hoping to see such excellent deals near the end of the sale again today.

Awesome, this sounds exactly like what we have called Trash to Treasure! And with a school of 45,000 A LOT OF STUFF gets left behind! Last year I got my TV there for $5, a new computer chair for about the same amount, and some clothes and other things.
This year I'm seriously considering borrowing a big truck and getting there at 6am for the early bird admission because it's that popular!

I would kill my child if they left a Le creuset pot. Those things are so expensive and I love them. Lucky you.

Well, our second trip reveiled that a lot had gone on between the time we were there first thing this morning and when we came back. Now they were done getting real money and were just trying to get rid of everything. So you could take a shopping bag and stuff it for $5, and a lot of other stuff was just plain free!
I ended up hitting the women's clothing with a vengence. I got about 25 items for $5, so about $0.20 an item -- not as good as last year, but you still can't beat the price!
got a keyboard (computer) for free, and I found a couple of Xmas candy tins, and ornaments. They were all free.
Our most unique item, though, was... a dog house. Now, we don't have a dog. But we DO have a cat who LOVES to sit in, under or within anything. So we bought that as well for $5. We now refer to it as Le Chateau de Tempest.
So our final total was $48 dollars for quite a good day's worth of scrounging.
