Once the binding is sewn all the way around your quilt, take your scissors and trim any excess batting or bits of material that may be a bit wider than your quilt.
Now the only thing remaining is to flip your quilt over, fold your finding in half, press and sew by hand. I hand sew all my bindings on the back, just because it makes for a neater binding.
If you look at the following picture, you will see where the corner will be mitred once you have sewn your binding to the back of your quilt.

There are other ways to do your binding. You might find an easier way in a quilting book that your comfortable with. Go for it. I like this one because you get great mitred corners if you do it right. Although hard to explain, I do hope you can understand it.
