Anyone know what these needles are?
I won a big lot of sewing items at an auction today and in them I found these sewing needles that are encased in glass tubes. I have no clue how old they are, what they are used for, or what. But there are about 20 of them....
I can't get a decent picture, but I found just one online. Here's what they look like:

Hard to tell how big they are, but they sorta look like tatting needles to me.

The needle inside is about 2" long and looks like a regular sewing needle...only it's completely encased in glass. If you click on the picture it magnifies it a bit so you can actually see the needle inside the glass. In order to get the needle out, one would have to break the glass. It's puzzling me lol.

But encased in glass? As in, you can't get them out unless you break the glass?
I can see why you would think they look like tatting needles. If you just take a quick look, it looks like BIG needles. But it's not. It's a glass tube with a regular-sized sewing needle INSIDE the glass tube.Last edited by YankeeMom; 08-30-2008 at 08:35 PM.

Sterilized for your protection. Or blessed and encapsulated...

No clue what they are but they are neat.

Now that I know the size, I'm thinking tattoo needles. LOL or not. I have no idea. But agree the glass must be sterilization.

Well, the only thing I can find is that they may have been used during WWII. Dh says maybe the glass kept the needles from rusting and poking through packs? Also in the same container were black safety pins, which were also used during WWII.
It's just weird that I can't find anything on them online.

Perhaps a local VFW would have some resources that can direct you to your answer like a museum? A home arts museum or textile museum may also know something more about them.

Have you contacted the owner of the webpage where you found the photo? She might know what they are.
