Serger - in use or collecting dust or want one?
do you have a serger? do you use it or is it hiding in a dark corner of the closet collecting dust?
If you do what kind do you have? if you want one which one do you want?
I would love to talk about serging... likes, experiments, fears?
let's get those sergers out and serge foreward into the new year!

I bought mine 2 yrs ago new at Walmart.
Brought it home, tried it out, and put it back in box.
Have not worked with it since.
Mine has a cutter that cuts the cloth as you go.
I don't like that part of it at all.
Someday if I have get the urge to really sew, I can dig it back out again.
I have 3 singer sewing machines currently, and all I have done recently is some mending of hubby's work clothes.

I have a Janome. I bought it last year it was about $350. I use it regularly, a few times a week. I sell things that I make on Etsy, and also use it to make my kiddos clothing. One of my favorite things that it does is a rolled hem. I use it on the edges of cloth napkins and they look very professional, it is one of the things I sell on Etsy and I've sold more than enough things made with it, to pay for it. lol

Don't have one, want one, just not in our budget at this time. I know it would get well used, however it's not a top priority right now.

I have 2, a Pfaff I got in 1999 and a 25 year old singer I use them both all the time .The singer I keep threaded with white thread and use it when matching colour isn't that important.Michelle I would love a Babylock Imagine it's a fantastic machine but it's not in my budget right now.
For anyone interested in buying a new serger the Brother 1034 or 3034 is the best deal around.I just spent hours researching serger quality for my sister, who doesn't sew,as a christmas gift for her DIL

When I go on a sewing splurge I always wish I had one, but I know I don't have the space and can't justify the cost for the amount of use it would get. I would absolutely love to try one out though, or have one suddenly fall into my lap (okay, not literally into my lap - ouch)

there are many good used sergers at your local sew-n-vac for under $200, the brother, singer and white are under $200
no they aren't electronic, no they don't do a coverhem, but they are just as good as the expensive ones.
I have 8 sergers.. Elna, Viking, White.. I love my white serger!!! just love it! take away all 7 and I will keep my white! actually I am now looking at getting a Juki.
I use my serger 50% of the time, the other 50% is sewing on my SM.. zippers, buttonholes and some fancy stitch work. For construction, my serger is what I use. I do sew heirloom and love the serger for lace insertion, pintucks, and sewing lave together.
A serger is like a sewing machine attachment... larger and stand alone! LOL!

I want one and hope to have the funds to buy one by this summer. I'm hoping my "rationale" of "I can make things to sell with it" works out!

Brook, thank you for that info. I was thinking/hoping that was what I could do with it. I just did not take the time when I bought the serger to really play with it. My concern was that it worked, and I could fiqure out how to thread it. I had wanted one real bad, and decided new was the way to go for me.
My plan is to try using it again sometime soon.
I just picked up another sewing machine recently that was free to me. It's a older singer and wow is it ever heavy. Which is a good thing, because without me taking the bottom off to check, I am 99 % sure it has metal gears. Which is a good thing
Lately I have been working with yarn. First I crocheded some hats. Then I knitted a bunch of them. Now I am back to playing with crochet, trying to use up some odds and ends of yarn, and making some squares edged in black to make a scrap afghan, granny square style. I think I get into a one track mind sometimes.
