    Question Sewing Gauze

I have a medium weight gauze I want to sew into bathroom curtains (to go over mini blinds). I am currently washing it in hot water to shrink it as much as possible. However, I am curious how I'm going to sew a rod pocket in this fabric. Any ideas? I think it's going to stretch along the stitching line...the vertical wrinkles will come out. Will they? Is there a way to do this? Maybe tissue paper either side? Or something simpler? Or am I worrying over nothing?

I don't think you'll have any trouble sewing it, especially if there are multiple layers for the pocket. You can always test on scraps. I think you'll need to adjust the tension on your machine for the lighter fabric.

There is a thread meant for stretchy fabrics. I can't remember exactly what it is called, but it gives a bit, so if you were to stretch it out, the thread would stretch just a bit before snapping! It might help, but you probably shouldn't have too many problems with it. Especially on a curtain, that won't be stretched all that much. Opening and closing the curtain wouldn't cause too much stress on the seam. I think you'll be okay, but I would give a test on a pieces of scrap fabric!

thanks everyone. I generally pressed the top 6" ...not stretching the fabric too much. I had serged the edge before washing it. So I just turned the serged edge down and sewed to lines of stitching to make a pocket for a rod. Hung the curtains. I didn't even bother to take the selvedge off the side to hem it. It just seemed like a heavy look for such light fabric. I have them hanging now...but not hemmed. I want them to hang a few days to see how they're going to stretch. Then I'll decide what length to hem them.

Finished hemming these last week. Nice looking light curtains for the bath...hanging over mini-blinds. Not bad at all! And you gotta like the price ... free. A friend gave me the fabric. I have to find decent tiebacks now. I think I'll use the Dollarama ones from the bedroom, and pick up more when I go to Dollarama next.
