Does anyone know of a good sewing reference book?
I've sewn a lot in my life, but I've mostly hacked my way through. Lately I've been wanting to improve my skills and move on to more difficult projects.
I'd like a book that tells things like the proper way to mark a pattern, how to clip curves, make gathers, etc.
Any suggestions?

We use these books as text books at the college.
Try your local college, look at some of the books there, see what meets your needs and they buy that one. If they don't have what you are looking for, go to the help desk and ask them for assistance, they can do interdepartmental loans. I have gotten books from private libraries.

Does anyone like The New Vogue Sewing Book for reference? I just scored one at the thrift store, but I haven't yet gotten into it.

Muse - try the thrift stores, I found a copy of a sewing book there, it's a Singer Complete Book of Sewing. It's so old it's been out of print longer than I have been drawing breath.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

I won the auction for the book Brook recommended. I got it yesterday and recommend it to anyone who's looking for a sewing reference book. It covers everything and has tons of photos, it's exactly what I was looking for!

I just bought that book at my library's used book sale!! I got it for a $1. It is fantastic!! It has a huge section of different types of stitches, both machine and hand, and dissects a sewing machine for you (so maybe I can figure out what is wrong with mine), and then goes into how to sew just about everything you can imagine.
