Smile Sewing Club - December 2009

~So what are you all sewing in December?
I'm still making cold weather gear:slippers, wrist warmers, vests and hoping to finally make a sleeping cap.
I also have a few repairs that I need to buy materials for.
And I want to make some terry covers for my Swiffer.~

Ok, I sent off for a book..Sewing Green. It came, but was patterns, not a book-& that's ok. There's a pattern for mittens using a wool sweater that has been washed & dryed. Well, I've bought 5 sweaters from the Salvation Army for $1 each (sale) & I've shrunked (is that a word? LOL)them. I'm ready to sew, but, I don't have a sewing area, except, for my kitchen table. I'm babysitting all week and I won't leave my sewing out for little hands to get into. So, I'll get to it eventually. Anyone-have you made mittens with sweaters?

I don't know if I can stop doing the quilting stuff long enough for some 'regular type' sewing but I might even surprise myself!!

Hope everyone posts lots of pics!

    Happy sewing everyone!!

~I'm not a fan of mittens so I haven't made them before. Sounds like a great idea for the sweaters though.
I have wanted to try felting for years. I often look for wool sweaters during thrift sales and yard sales but I have yet to see any.
Last week my mom and I were actually approached by another crafter why we were in the craft section of the thrift store and she brought up felting. I think it's the serious felters out there that snatch up all the good deals. I wanted the felted wool for slippers.
Yesterday I got in 2 hours of sewing time. Well, it was mostly cutting time as I cut out 2 disc golf towels, pieces for 2 swiffer covers and pieces for another pair of slippers. I sewed and finished the covers and one slipper.~

I haven't used sweaters for felting, but my mom knits purses, totes and even a sweater coat, then shrinks it to felt it, they are absolutely beautiful. After the holidays, I might have to check out the thrift stores to see if I can find wool sweaters. I've also seen people make Christmas stocks and totes out of the sweaters. Such a cool idea.

Let me tell ya, I was @ the Salvation Army a few days before the dollar sale on Saturday. I SAW wool sweaters..but on the sale day-none. I bought 70% wool sweaters..will this work/I don't know. The clerk says she has a lady come in every week & buys all the wool sweaters they can put out. I saw on TV how you can unravel a sweater and remake something else, maybe that is what she's doing.

I am working on my 6 yr old grandson's Wise Man Outfit for our church Christmas play. Went to a rehearsal yesterday afternoon. Glad I have not put forth much effort into an elegant outfit. I do believe with as much rolling around on the floor that he and 2 others were doing, that the outfit may become ripped before the play is over.

Too funny L - as they say 'boys will be boys'......though I was probably as bad at that age.

Be sure to share pics of it.....before it gets too torn up!

No sewing today....I'll fill up some bobbins, oil machine, change the needle, and clean her up.
