Default Anyone take a class for teaching?

I was wondering if any of you have taken a class for teaching sewing? Like this http://www.kidscansew.com/ or this http://www.palmerpletsch.com/workshop_teachtrain.htm
The 2nd one is more clothing oriented.

The closest teacher in my area (for the first link) is about 250-300 miles away, and as far as I can tell, the ONLY teacher in my state!

Sewing isn't offered in schools around here anymore like it was in my day, i.e. home economics.

So what I was wondering was, if you have a child (boy or girl) that was interested in learning, would you look for a class in your area, and what would you pay for your child to learn the basics?

I love to sew, and really could probably teach without taking the class, but it would give me actual credentials that I don't have now, just many years of hands on learning and teaching myself. lol

    So what do you think?

I agree that it would be fun and very informative to take a course to teach sewing - especially to children!! There are several place to take sewing classes here - but they are on the other side of the island - really too far to be practical for us - and I don't know what they would charge.

If it were my child, I would teach myself. I have taught children to sew - working from a let's make something point of view!! it was fun, they learned and made something.

In checking out the first link and just looking at random states - there don't seem to be that many teachers around - 4 in California? Wow!!

It is a shame that sewing and cooking are not taught in schools the way they once were. I think you could create a great program on your own.

The few children that I have known that wanted to sew have learned it from their mothers.......both boys and girls.

The others don't want to learn. And a couple of them have been close enough to a rural community that they could get into 4-H and learn there. Our city has limited 4-H but you have to really dig around to find info.......too bad really.

Here they have a quilting class at the college once in a while but nothing for general sewing...The sewing machine companys store has classed but they are 70 mile away..They have 4 H here too but no one that is leaders of it sew. So I would say that really there is a need for something like this.

Thanks everyone for your input. I too live in the country, we have 4H clubs, but am unsure as to whether they teach sewing and cooking. I think around here it is mostly FFOA (Future Farmers Of America), I live in dairy land.

I'll check with the local girl scout council too, see if it would be worth my time.

    Thanks again.
