~Drawstring lounge pants/shorts are the easiest and cheapest garment to start with. You'll need nothing but fabric and thread.
Another fabric and thread only project is a bathrobe. Choose a kimono style(without the fat sleeves)to avoid setting in sleeves. An easy pattern will have you cut the shape of a big T.
Patterns for scrubs(nurse/doctor wear)may be perfect for you to start with since they usually use the above principles.
Choose only 100% woven cotton to work with at first! Knits(t-shirt)and twills(denim) and anything with synthetic fibers can stretch a bit while sewing and be a frustrating experience for new sewers.
And get a seam ripper!

How about a basic T-shirt? With the correct needle and a zig zag stitch they are really easy. This looks like a basic FREE pattern to start with.

With a little creativity you can lengthen the sleeves and add a ribbing cuff and make sweatshirts also.

Needed that LOL button again MW! I definately agree with using kwik sew patterns. They give you shortcuts. As far as the drawstring/vs elastic lounge pants/shorts; my experience has been as for wearing them, the elastic is much more comfortable and making a casing for elastic is relatively simple.
I have heard that Burda patterns have no seam allowances that you have to add them yourself.
