Default Questions from A 'Newbie' at Sewing

I'm interested in starting some crafting with demin and will need a sewing machine for it (I tried handstitching a few of them but it was hard on the fingers...LOL).

I have not done any major sewing for 30 years (in middle school). I have used my mom's machine to do a few mending projects but that's it, and even then I'd get frustrated with the poor machine when it didn't do what I wanted it to do (I know, I need to develop patience and I think I have now).
Does anyone have any suggests as far as machines, needles, tips for sewing on denim? I think I have a Brother sewing machine being given to me already. Are there online sewing tutorials for threading the machine and the bobbins in case the machine doesn't come with a manual? Any tips, words of wisdom and encouragement are welcome.

    Thanks a bunch !!

They make needles especially for denim. There's a German company that makes the needles I have used in my Pfaff, but I can't remember the name of that needle maker. Anyhow, they have needles labelled for denim.

The number of layers of denim you'll be sewing all at once will determine how "beefy" of a machine will be ideal.

I'm sure others will have more to offer.

    Good luck!

There are tutorials on how to thread a machine and bobbins online. Just google the machine you have... not all are the same

Denim needs a denim needle (size 16 I think) and foot (if you use feet... I can't sew without one)

Start with something small... like a denim potholder... before you jump in to a huge project.

    Have fun!

All machines will sew through denim, just like all automobiles will get you to the grocery store, but some will do it better than others and with more comfort.

I agree that you should start slow with a few small projects to get yourself back into the swing of things, and to become familiar with your machine. If the machine has sat for a while or has been part of someone's move (bounced around in a truck) it may be worth having it serviced first.

~I love sewing denim! Definitely invest in denim needles. They are very thick and sturdy.
Use clothespins to hold your layers of fabric together when sewing instead if sewing pins. I've bent and ruined way too many pins by forgetting to use this tip!
I also have a little gadget called a Jean-a-ma-jig. It will keep the tension even when sewing very thick seams. I've used it hundreds of times in the years I've had it.
My machine is a basic Brother. It takes seconds to thread so don't be intimidated!~

wow I want a jean-a-majig! that looks awsome...
Also agree with the denim needles... a must have when sewing any thickness... I have had a round jean quilt in the works for way to long 5-6 years... I realy have to get at it...
It is a realy cute quilt you start with denium rounds and square fabric pieces and fold the edges of the circles over the edges of fabric so it just peeks out.. real cute.
    must work on it....

I totally forgot all about this quilt and I really want to make one!! Mahalo plenty!!

About sewing with denim - I love my Pfaff and bought it for its dual feed - top and bottom - really ehlps in sewing everything!!

While small projects are always great to start with - for denim I would also limit the number of corners - always more challenging with heavier small fabrics. How about an oval potholder or placemat!

Looking forward to see what you create!!
