Sew Excited
Okay, I couldn't resist the pun! I had mentioned to dh that for next Christmas/Birthday, I was going to ask for a sewing machine and he mentioned that his father still had his mothers (she passed away in 1979) in the guest bedroom. He called my fil and asked if his sister had asked for it, or his aunts, and my fil said, No way, it's all Amy's! So, I'm getting a sewing machine! Granted, it's very old, probably over 30 years, but apparently it works. It's the kind that is built into the table and you flip the top and the sewing machine comes with it. My gramma had one when I was little. When I get it home, I'll post the brand and model number and hopefully some of you could help me figure it out. I'm very excited, as I've been wanting to get into sewing for awhile now.

I inherited my grandma's sewing machine... it sounds like the same type. It sews very nice... my mom made all of the bridesmaid dresses for my wedding with it in 1993. It is stored at my other grandma's house right now for safe keeping.

Thats so exciting, Amy! Now you can sew some cute things for your dd.

Sounds just like my machine. DH bought it for me in the late 60's. Still works fine. Mine was purchased at Sears. Have fun with your sewing machine!

I know you ladies who love older sewing machines will share my excitement at my purchase today!
My old machine (1970s Vanguard) has broken and when I took it into the shop today I found it would be £60 plus for service and repair - not really worth it. I had a look around and what do I see but a gorgeous old Singer machine. Now I like sewing but don't undertake anything fancy, just simple curtains, cushions etc and I only ever use a machine for long seams, anything else I'm happy to do by hand. So what do I see but this beautiful traditional Singer, all black metal with silver decoration, and it is in perfect working order, serviced, and runs like a dream and does a better seam than my old machine. It only does the basic straight stitch but there is a stitch length adjuster, and that's absolutely all I need it to do.
Oh yes, and it's a hand-wheel, non electric one! I have always wanted a hand-operated old machine and was so thrilled to get this. It's a 1920s model - still has the original instruction book dated 1929.
I'm collecting it from the shop later this week - can't wait to get it home. It still has the original gorgeous wooden box cover, too.
