Talking Are you ready to begin sewing? *Edited*

    Ladies,

I have to tell you I am shocked and thrilled at how many of you have joined the Sewing Club!!

I am presently waiting for my camera battery to recharge and then I will be starting out with an apron tutorial. This will get you ready for the next apron swap!

Do not feel you have to do every tutorial. They will be there to do at your own speed and if you choose to or not.

There is a lot of information you need to know before beginning to sew. I am trying to get it all typed up, but some of it may come out after the first tutorial, so please bear with me.

Here is a list of items you will need to get you started. If you do not have all of them, don't worry, I think a notion swap would be a good one for our 1st.

    ~Sewing Machine
    ~Thread
    ~Bobbins
~Scissors (Not your kitchen ones or ones your kids use, these must be kept for sewing only.)
    ~Tape Measure
    ~Pins and Pincushion or box
    ~Seam Ripper

So tell us what you have in the line of sewing notions and how ready are you to start?

Also please tell us what level sewer you consider yourself.

    ~Beginner
    ~Intermediate
    ~Advanced

Me? If they made it, I have it!

I have all of the above listed. Plus some. (quilting supplies). I don't have one of those cutting mats. I know my mom used to have one. Do you think they are necessary or helpful?

Melody, you don't need a cutting mat (a necessity for quilting and rotary cutting) for sewing, although it does come in handy sometimes.

You guys have fun with this... if I had a sewing machine, I'd join you in a heartbeat! I'll keep peeking in, though, to see how everyone is doing!

Ready! I know how to sew, mostly. I'm way out of practice and have a lot of "duh" moments. I made a bunch of those dress towels before I figured out how I wished I'd have done it! I usually make my own patterns. I left the cutting board thing at Mom's, duh! Can you tell I'm excited?

I have all of the above. Plus a sewing room full. I guess I have more quilting toys than sewing toys really. I consider myself an intermediate sewer and I hope to mainly get some fun out of the sewing club. I will enjoy seeing the different techniques that people use when they sew.

I have made alot of clothing for the kids, from simplicity patterns. mostly play clothes, hats, and a jacket for ds, once i have batteries i will show some of the things i have made. I have made a dressy out fit for dd. I have made a dress for me as well. I hope to get some better ways of doing things and fun out of the club

I have all of the mentioned supplies, except I really need to get a set of "sewing" scissors. I have a pair, but it's not full-sized, so I'd like to get another pair.

I'd classify myself as a beginner seamstress. I've had some experience, but I really don't know how to follow a pattern, and I don't have a clue how to make a buttonhole.

I would love to learn how to make some simple things that I can use as gifts!

I am a total newbie. I had a friend help me try to make a maternity outfit when I was preggers with dd. We moved before I got it done. Guess what still isn't finished and dd is 2 1/2?

I wanna learn the basics. I would love to make clothes (dresses) for dd and myself. I have some dinosaur fabric for ds (3-4 yards I think) that he wanted a "blanket" out of. What do you make for boys with cotton? (crisp cotton?)

I have everything but a seam ripper (now isn't that a laugh). I consider myself a beginner. I have made simple costumes, pillows, etc. but nothing really involved. I need help with using a pattern and I do not know how to put in zippers or to do button holes. I would like to be able to make simple gifts and maybe simple clothes especially for me and Ryan.

I have all the supplies you've listed Dee. I agree with Dee, a good pair of sewing scissors makes all the difference in the world. Costs a bit but well worth it.

I'd consider myself an intermediate, but I'm sure there is always more to learn even at this level. I'm excited about this club, because although I've been sewing for years, I have been chicken to try more advanced things, such as jackets, vests, dresses, etc.

I am a beginner beginner. I have all the supplies you mentioned plus some t-pins, 3 seam rippers, pinking shears and a hook thingy that helps you turn things right side out.

I would like to make things I wouldn't be embarassed to use or give as gifts. I would like to be able to make pratical things like curtains , aprons, clothing and also put in zippers and mend. I'd like to do all that with confidence and grace.

Thanks ladies, this is helping to find out what to include in the tutorials.

I forgot to add a couple of things to the list to get you started, the first 2 items aren't madatory but oh so useful.

    ~Tracing Paper
    ~Tracing Wheel

These 2 items I can't even believe I forgot, next to your sewing machine these are a absolute MUST!!

    ~Iron
    ~Ironing Board

Here is a picture of a tracing wheel and paper. You can tell by the price of the paper mine is very old! Time to get me some new.

I have everything except the tracing paper. I would consider myself beginner. I sewed years ago and enjoyed it but I must say I'm rusty! Getting into the quilting has given such a love for handmade items and I'm hoping to expand to sewing. Thanks so much Dee!

Zippers scare me!! and collars, well, we won't go there! Like Darlene said I'd love to make things that are practical around the house and lovely enough to give as gifts.
