Exclamation Dee, question about buttons & buttonholes

Dee, I know that on patterns, the buttonholes are marked and you just mark them on your material.

BUT, here is my question. In most cases I need to put the buttonholes a bit closer. Dd likes to have more buttonholes than what is normally on clothing. How do I mark those then and keep them even.

Then when I sew the buttons on, is there a trick to making sure those buttons line up exactly right? Sewing the buttons on so they were perfectly lined up in dd's blouse was a problem.

I'm sure there is something really simple that I'm missing.

    HELP!!

I have to adjust patterns a lot because I am short, so I too have to move buttonholes.

    1) You generally start with the top one about 1/2" to 3/4" down from the top.

    2) Measure down to where you want the last one.

    3) Then I just divide the total length by how many buttons I want. Mark the top, bottom and center then spilt up the rest.

    Not very scientific!

To sew on your buttons across from the buttonholes. Make your buttonholes in the garment and cut them open. Then lay your garment flat and place the buttonholes side on top of the other side. Take a straight pin and pin in the center of the buttonhole to the other side. Gently wiggle each pin through the buttonholes and then you sew the button on where the pin is. Generally it is 1/2" in from the edge, but you will go by however deep the buttonholes were set in from the edge.

Tip for cutting buttonholes Use a craft knife and cut from the bar tack to the center. Do this twice, once from eache end of the bar tack. Do not try to cut your buttonhole open all at once. You can very easily cut your bar tack at the ends and there goes your buttonhole.
