Question What brand of thread do you use when sewing?

Just interested in knowing what you use when your sewing.

Again I use Gutermann sewing thread. I love the quality of it and the price is comparable with other brands. I do have to watch though that I keep the polyester thread away from the cotton, so have 2 different places to keep each type.

I had in the past always used coats and clark for until I got a taste for Guterman now it is Guterman all the way for sewing. I use little happy face stickers I had on hand to mark the poly ones. I use maxilock for my serger unless I am doing a rolled hem then I use wooly nylon. I use sulky only in my embroidery machine. I am over run with thread!!!!

Heh Angelee, what a neat idea to use happy face stickers to mark your poly thread. Never even thought of that. Now where did I put those happy face stickers....hmmmm lets see. I'm off to find them.

I use Sulky when I do applique. Love that thread for that. Love all the colors it comes in as well.

no kidding I can stare t the sulky display all day. I applique with my poly guterman but I had never thought of using sulky for it. Duh! We have a lot of cheap threads at the store and when quilters come in and buy cheap thread I just cringe. I'll tell you though there is nothing as stubborn as a grandma quilter about her thread!

Angelee, I totally agree. When you spend hours doing a quilt or even sewing for that matter, you want it to last. I've seen what cheap thread can do in a quilt. Then you have to either take it apart or try fixing it and its hard work.

I'm a stickler when it comes to thread and material.

Right on! Why undo hours and hours of labour because of poor quality material. Penny wise and pound foolish!

I use Guterman, Molynycke, and Mettler but the last 2 are harder to find, they are my older spools and most of the newer ones are Guterman.

I did use Coats and Clark a long time back but have switched.

Good thread is important for the sewing machine, so that the tension doesn't go weird mid project or cause snarls.

I had problems with C+Clark thread un winding or un ravelling. A knot would hang up at the needle and all of a sudden the outer twist would start piling up, then a sudden snarl of thread would happen and it breaks. YUCK!

I like to have the fatter spools of thread in the most used colours. I dont' colour match unless the thread will show, I aim for blending when doing seams. Black, White, Gray, Taupe and some brown work well.

I will buy colour match in smaller spools for hemming and top stitching though.

I was just reading Threads mag this morning, looking for something else and a reader tip caught my eye on using hairspray to stiffen thread to thread needles easier.

You spray a little on thumb and forefinger, then roll them together, then roll the thread end in between. THEN use the now stiffer thread (with all the fuzzy bits glued down) to thread your needle whether for hand sewing or for threading your machine.
