Default patchwork ladies, can you help

i have some fabric that I've been given and I've decided to make a patchwork tea cosy, several pairs of oven mits and some pot holders. I've never done patchwork before. Do I make the patchwork squares to suit the shape I want or do I make a sheet of patchwork and cut out my shapes?
Thanks in advance for any help I receive.

If it were me, I think I'd make a patchwork "sheet" and then cut my pattern from that. But i have never done this before. I just know the other crafty ladies here will know exactly what to do. Good question, I can't wait to see the answer, too.

You can do it either way Bethany, depends on what kind of look you are going for.

Seeing as its patchwork, I would make a sheet first, then cut out my pattern from there.
