Thread: made my own nursing pillow

made my own nursing pillow
with a removeable cover.
here's how:
i used a skirt that fits my waist to do the measurement for the boppy i traced it, then i "smoothed out the tracing"...made it look more symetrical (all on wrong side of fabric). then i knew i wanted the sides to be about 9'' so i marked a few dots at that distance, and i wanted the center of the front to go out 13'', tapering towards the 9'' markings, so i did that as symmetrical as i could.
then i added 1/2 inch seam allowance +/- to the inside seam and the outter seams and went from ther cutting away. sewed it up, turned it like a tube, filled it, stitched the end closed (used 3 bags of polyfill). then I made the cover like the boppy but cut off the very ends and added some allowance in the inside seam for the zipper. then decided i needed ties so i added them to the inside edge of the ends.

I got the idea after visiting about a half dozen sites that said you could make your own, and some sites where you could buy, I came up with this as a "dash of this a pinch of that". I used flannel for the boppy itself and made a cover from cotton. I probably should have gone back and re-read (or read thouroughly) some directions or ideas, it wouldn't have been such a cussing fest, lol. if i could remember where i had gone.
I bet someone could do a more "like the origional" design if they measured a real boppy. But I had specific things in the size dept that were important to me. Like that I am "plus sized" and need a bigger inner circle, so i looked for what i had around the house that would measure that easily and be traceable. and i didn't want a narrow tube, but a wide pillow instead. Anyhow if you wanted to make a pattern all your own you can do a search for "make your own boppy" or " make your own breast feeding pillow" something like that, and read through what you find. take what seems reasonable from all the sites and you'll come up wtih something that is uniquely yours and just the right size too. I bet you could add ppockets to it to hold burp cloths, maybe teethers, pacifiers, breast pads? or whatever you wanted.
if you make one, show it off, I can't wait to see all the variations.
