    Default I need a clue

My step mom, who is in her 80's made some towels years ago that had decorations on them. I don't know what the technique is called. I may have to call her and ask her again what its called. This may have been something done in the 40's or 50s? Anybody seen this before. hopefully you can see the pic ok. All the work is done on the front except the very ends where it starts and stops. Anyone have an idea?

Looks like counted cross stitch to me Mel. You can purchase towels now with cross stitch fabric (Aida cloth) on the ends to stitch on. I have seen them in Michael's, AC Moore's, Wally's, and JoAnn's. HTH

As to the name of it, I think Carolyn has it right.

I have seen the back of this, i don't think it is cross stitch. its almost like weaving on just the front of the fabric. If my digital cam had a bit more clarity i might be able to describe better.

I think Denise is might be right. Here is a link - http://hereandabove.com/crafts/huckweav/hwtips.html I know this has become quite popular with quilters.

Here are some pictures at the same site http://hereandabove.com/crafts/hwindex.html

    Thanks everyone.

I think it must be the huck embroidery. I will try to show the back edge so you can see.

I know that's huge, but when I went smaller I lost resolution. Had to put something colored behind it to see the section lol.

I have also heard it called Swiss embroidery. My Mom recognized it as well and she also called it scandinavian or swiss embroidery. It is a similar technique to hand smocking and it goes through the top - you don't see it on the backside.

Thanks everyone for your help. My step-mom didn't remember what it was called anymore. She said when she was young she did quite a few towels. I just love the look of it and how clean it is on the backside.

I knew if I posted it here, someone would have an idea for me. You guys rock!! Thanks again!
