Well, I have only made crib sheets but the process should be the same. For a crib sheet, you take your rectangle of material and cut a square out of each corner equal to the depth of your mattress plus a casing allowance. So, in effect, you need to have a piece of material equal on one side to the length of your mattress plus 2x the depth of your mattress, plus 2x casing allowance (or just enough to serge elastic).

Once you have square cut out of each corner of the rectangle as above, you bring the remining edges in that corner together and sew them securely. This forms the corners of the sheet. Do that on all four corners. Then you can serge elastic directly to the edge of the sheet (either all the way around or only at the top/corners) and leave the sides (usually overcasted or hemmed if they were cut and would ravel, or you can form a casing for your elastic and then insert it.

That is it for a crib sheet, and probably works for the other. I have a king size bed though so haven't been eager to try it for that! :-)
