Sewing Question of the Day 5/10...
Would you or have you ever sewn for a living?
I have always done sewing on the side as a business, but not full time. I am not ready to leave my current job yet.
How about you?

No, but I would love to. I don't think the market around here is very good though, so I may try on the net.
Anyone have any suggestions? What sells well etc....?~~ Dee ~~

No I haven't but would love to as well.
Dee, I don't have any idea. I have wondered though about clothes for special need's kids/adults and especially for those in wheel chairs. I also think specialized bibs would be great for seniors and even those who have difficulty eating.
I think too cloth diapers would probably sell as well as aprons.
Great question Michele.

I've only done it as a side for extra money (all crafts, not just sewing alone).
Alterations and upholstering do well. Those can be done at home and you can make a living at them.
Craft malls and fairs can make you some money if you have things that sell and don't flood the market with the same stuff others have.
My SIL tells me that crochet ponchos are the rage in Dallas now. I'm working on some to put in her booth down there.

I've done some sewing on the side too - alterations and I've made a dress for a choir girl and a dress for a pageant. But, I want sewing to be fun not a chore, so I don't get too invlolved in that.

I ran a custom sewing and alterations business from my home for 10 yr. before moving here in 1990. I really enjoyed it and had a good clientele but after 10 yr. I burned out on always sewing for everyone else and never having time to sew for me. I also worked part time (2 or 3 days a week) at a local retail store.

Sorry, got ahead of myself. That was supposed to be retail fabric store. I might add that when the store closed the owner divided up everything that was left after the closing sale between the 4 employees. I never had to buy thread or a zipper or buttons the whole time I ran my business
When we moved here I took several shoeboxes of thread to goodwill. And I still have plenty. Also sold a huge box of assorted zippers at a rummage. Couldn't part with the buttons, though. I have a wonderful case with pull out drawers full of them.

I just like to do my sewing when the mood hits me. That wouldn't be too good as a business

I did some minor mending when I was in college-- but never anything full time. I don't have the patience for it.
