Question Do you have a button jar?

I remember playing with my great grandmother's button jar. I played with it for hours on end. I have smaller jars that I have my buttons in. Dd collects buttons and one of the first place she heads for in a material store is the button display.

No, not a jar. I do have a smallish button collection, though. Had a much bigger one when I was a kid.

I inherited my MIL's button tin fairly early on in our marriage, many years before she passed away. I love to just open the tin and look at them. She collected them and had many of them handed down to her!

I have a round tin that I use to store my buttons. I've made garments in the past and used expensive buttons. I have recycled the buttons in the past and used the buttons on other garments. I save all the buttons on the garments that are no longer wearable. Most of the time the garments get donated to the thrift shop but sometimes the garment is too worn out to donate so I harvest the buttons and use the rest of the cloth for rags or sometimes the good parts of the garment gets used for charity quilts. On a sewing show I saw where the buttons were used to make a pin cushion. You put the buttons in the bottom of a sherbert glass and glued them down. You then covered a tomato pincushion with pretty fabric and glued that in. It was right cute and I would like to make one some day. Also, I've seen buttons used to decorate a frame. Buttons can be used to make jewelry like necklaces and bracelets. I suppose those that are into scrapbooking can find a use there. I've used buttons for eyes on stuffed animals. I never throw away a button.

I inherited my GM and mom's button collection. And, I think someone elses- can't remember who. Plus all of mine that I remove from too old garments and sewing projects I've done.

It used to be in the original cookie tins- but now I have them sorted according to color in a plastic box with compartments- like the fishing tackle box- only larger.

Love to look at them too! I started to collect buttons from different countries but didn't get too far there.

I have two mason jars full.

I remember playing with my grandmother's buttons what seemed like for hours. On rare occasions she would discribe the clothing it would come off of for me.

I wonder if buttons are collectables and worth money like coins are. If that is true, it sounds like there are some FV members that have might have a fortune hanging around in a jar.

Oh-h-h...this is where one of my most interesting posts will be made.

I currently only have a small jar. But this is my mom's favorite collection/passion. At last count recently, she has 24 gallons of buttons and about to start on # 25 !!

They are currently in many containers, including (I think) 2 lamps. We recently found two huge glass jar lamps that I think were either oil or water jars. They are shaped somewhat like a misshapen lightbulb, upside down. They have large holes in one side so we are trying to figure out how to get the most buttons in each, but a lot will go into each one regardless.

Mom has got a lot of the buttons from the Rescue Mission "bag" clothes. They sell large, clear garbage bags of clothes for 33¢ each, 4 for 98¢ or 10 for $1.97 !

I'll try to get some photos one of these days.

I even have some buttons that were in my grandmother's sewing box. She would be 107 if she were still alive.

I have a decorative cookie tin that has buttons from my grandmother and mom. I love looking at them and remembering them. I have added to it since I got it.

Yes certain buttons can be used for scrapbooking, but you have to coat them so that they are acid/lingin free.
