Never made one Missy, so I'm not sure. Why not check out the pattern sites, find a sarong pattern and look at the back of it for suggestions?

Most of them are made out of very soft cottons. If you want my advice, go to a thrift store and buy yourself some pretty-colored or white, very worn cotton sheets.

Figure out the size you want, then add a good four inches. Take a pair of scissors and cut stripes on the end, like tassels, and tie knots in them were the tassle meets the fabric of the sheet. Give it a quick straight stitch just at the end of the tassel so that it doesn't fray or rip further. Wrap 'er around your waist and voila!

ah, i didn't think of that. I am hoping to find a neutral or variety of a mottled brown (since my bathing suit is a chocolate-y color)

If you are near an East Indian district, often the sari shops have wonderful bargains in beautiful sari lengths of cloth often with lovely embroidered ends. Wrapping a sari is much like a sarong, and you can use the non fancy end to make something else.
