I might be just a little crazy........
Here's the story---Last year when the first grandbaby was on her way I set-up a baby quilt at our family reunion and had everyone there tie at least one tie and took their picture and presented it to my youngest DD at her baby shower.
I live in Oregon. Youngest DD lives in PA. Long ways away for this grandma.
Forward to this year. BIG BIG SIGH. Oldest DD, who lives in FL is having our second and third grandbabies sometime around Christmas. So in a moment of craziness I've decided to tie 2 more baby quilts. But, you saw this part coming, huh? There is no family reunion to facilitate this adventure.
So, I have to get these quilts all over the country and back to me before Nov 12th, The baby shower for Oldest DD and her identical twin girls.
So everyone keep your fingers crossed for this project! I'm relying on the US Postal Service and Priority Mail!! Would also appreciate it if you remembered DD and twins in your prayers. I'm a worrier and concerned these girls will be early......

Traveling Quilts
This is working out really well so far! My family and dear friends are the most indulgent group. I have an Aunt dropping by in the morning on her way past my house traveling to her home in Eastern Oregon. That is the last of the Oregon group!!
The sweet pink quilts are then starting their road trip. First stop is my eldest sister (we call each other Hoosters--long story-her 1st GD couldn't say sister and it has stuck like super glue). DHooster lives in Fresno. She & DH will tye and take pic's and sent them on their way!
Then it SLC, Preston, ID and back to Oregon.

Wow! That's a great project! And sounds like everyone is on board. My niece just had twins last week. I don't think anyone thought of doing anything like that here....And of course they are in my prayers.

The traveling quilts are finished in Fresno and off to Salt Lake City. I'm a little worried that they will get back to me before the 8th of Nov.
DD had check-up yesterday. Poor thing. She is 27 weeks and her uterus measures 34 weeks. Sleeping (sort of) in a recliner so she can breath. Still working full time, but to lay down and stay off her feet after work.
Family on the east coast think this is a very strange thing to do. They tell each other it's a "WEST COAST THING". So my question to you ladies is Do you tie baby quilts at baby showers or is this just a "WEST COAST THING?"
Or maybe I hang out with the crazies ????

I think it is a lovely idea. I have never heard of tying quilts at a baby shower before but I am not on either east or west coast, I am closer to the gulf coast, here in Texas. I love the idea and am going to borrow your idea for my next grandbaby.
Thanks for sharing your story with us and your DD will be in my prayers for a safe and happy pregnancy and birth.

I haven't heard of it either, but it sounds great!! I live in Missouri.
So, is this like a regular quilt that is tied? The blocks (or pieces) are sewn together and then you take that quilt to the shower. Sorry, I have only made one quilt and didn't tie it.
Anywhoo, regardless which coast thing it is , I think it is really sweet and what a lovely memory!!

The quilts did not make it back in time for the shower. I was a little upset, but got over it. Next time I will get my bright ideas earlier!! I told my DD what was going on and promised I would hand carry them on the plane when I go for the births.
I have extra time to finish the scrapbook of pictures of eveyone tying the quilt. I'm not a fan of scrapbooking--only do it when I absolutely have to. And this is one of those occasions.
I had a wonderful time visiting with my DD and DSIL. My other DD's and Grandbaby also came for the shower. It was in Ft Lauderdale and my DD's live in PA and OR, so it was great to get everyone together again. Spent time catching up and enjoying each other. And did I mention laughing and telling old stories? We do love to laugh and tease each other.
The quilts are simple ones, just solid pieces of fabric on each side with batting in the middle. I used large safety pins to hold it together and we used pink yarn to tye with. I kept it very simple for the non-quilters in the family! It is really fun to see the different knots people use. These are sturdy quilts that will last a long time.
So now to finish the scrapbook. GROAN. It will be worth it when its finished.Robin

I'm on the east coast and I've never heard of this either but I love the idea. Wish I had known this when my grandbabies were born. I made a few of the simple tied quilts several years ago and they do last a long time. I've been thinking I would make one for each of my five grandbabies for Christmas next year.
Hoping all is well with dd and the twins and can't wait to hear of their arrival.

Yeah!! The babies are here!!!
Alexis and Ashley were born the 29th at 7:06 and 7:09 am. They weighed in at 4 lbs 10 ozs and 4 lbs 7 ozs.
Mom and babies are doing well. They went to the NICU but are to be moved to the well baby nursey today. They grunting and working to hard to breath room air.
They are identical twins, and I'm searching for a mole or birthmark to tell the difference. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts. Oh life is good! Remind me of that in a couple of days when everyone is back home and it gets crazy!!!Robin
