Sewing for a real beginner!
I have been wanting to learn to sew for a little while and I got a sewing maching for christmas! The problem is I really don't know where to start. I have learned to thread my machine and my bobbin but that is all. What is the best place to start. I don't think there is any classes in this area that I know of and my grandmother who did sew is at that age where she forgetting everything. I have my sewing machine out, just don't know what to do next.
Any help would be appreciated?

Hi Beverly! I'm fairly new to sewing also. I started out making a small quilt, but you can also start by making a pillow for your couch or a table runner. There are a couple of really experienced sewers on here and I'm sure they will point you in the right direction. I've become addicted to fabric and sewing, it is very relaxing and rewarding!!

When I taught my DD's to sew I had them make a very simple pair of shorts with elastic waist--like the pj bottoms they wear now. The theory being that they could wear it when finished, straight lines to sew and no fitting the pattern.
If you want to sew for your home you could make a simple table cloth, press the edges under twice to make a clean finish and then just stitch around it.
Don't expect perfection!! It is a skill you learn with practise, but it is relaxing and rewarding.

Sewing with Nancy books are great for beginners. She has a show on public television too. See if your library has any of her books or videos. If you have a Joann's or Hancock fabric store close, sign up on their mailing list. They have patterns for .99 cents and $1.99 so you don't have to pay more than that for patterns. On certain sale days fabric, thread and notions on sale for up to 1/2 off.
Its not hard to sew on a machine. If you have never used a machine before just get some scraps and practice. If you make a mistake you can just take your seam ripper and remove your stitches. Good luck with your new hobby.
