Is it easy for you to follow a sewing pattern
This is one thing I really struggle with. I need to cut everything out and then try to figure it out myself without using the directions.
Can you follow directions of a sewing pattern easily and if so how do you do it? Or do you struggle like me and how have you compensated to make sewing easier?

Actually I use few patterns when sewing (or recipes when cooking...) I haven't had too much problem with directions when I do use a pattern though. I do know I will be avoiding collars on baby clothes though! And I'd much rather make a "sleeve" to thread elastic through than stitch it directly to the fabric. Hopefully one of these days I'll get a photo of the towels I've been making for you all to see! I should probably make my daughter another dress or 2 though, I'm getting tired of her clothes.

I never ever buy a Vogue pattern. Those seem to be the worst. If it's a Vogue pattern, I will totally refuse to make the item. Most of the others I can figure out.

I have a hard time with directions. I have to "feel" my way into it. Translating words into 3 D actions has always been hard. I like to watch somebody do something, then do it once then my fingers remember the way.

Try and stay with Simplicity patterns until you get the hang of it. They are the easiest to read and usually have pictures. I agree with Dolphin, Vogue patterns seem to be the hardest. McCalls are not bad, but for childrens' PJ's, nightgowns, robes, sweats, and lingerie, I have used Kwik Sew patterns. They are great! I have a couple of sergers, but you don't need to. A simple stretch stitch or a tight zigzag with do the same thing. Just make sure you read them as they only put in a 1/4" seam allowance as opposed to the usual 5/8" that other patterns use.
You can go to: http://www.kwiksew.com and see if you like them before you order any. We have a Singer store near me that carries them. Most of the Kwik Sew patterns I have are in a book form with master copies of all the patterns and sizes, (one book for children and 1 for adults). You need to purchase pattern fabric about .59 a yard, (it is similar to SEW IN interfacing only wider, freezer paper works well too, just trace on the dull side and tape together for the width where you need it.) and trace the size you need. This makes it very easy to alter, or go from one size in the waist to a different size in the hips! My problem! I also write on my traced pattern the date I made the item and for whom. This seems to help my fading memory LOL!
Good Luck!

Thanks for the information. I don't have a problem sewing the items though, I just can't follow the instructions. I figure it out by looking at the pattern, cutting out the pieces and putting it together. Its the same with anything that has instructions, I have a difficult time figuring them out.
btw - I use mostly Simplicity patterns. I love their styles.
