OMGosh, emily_hope, your mom had a house fire??
I'm glad she's ok. That must have been scary! HOw old is she? Was she hurt? I'm so sorry this happened. I gather from your gratitude posts that you and she are very close.

My DMother is 78 years old. She is JUST getting over a broken hip. This past Monday, lightning struck a tree in between our house and her house. One of the fireman said it struck the tree, traveled down into the root system and spread. It hit our house, knocked out the internet, the cable, the security system, two of our lights in the family room and fried the wires on our garage door. It blew out everything at her house, hit her gas line and caught her furnace on fire. And caught our pasture on fire.
It was very strange. We had not had any thunder or lightning at all, and wham. It was SO loud. And the rumble seem to go on and on. People in the neighboring counties have said they heard it. Me and my youngest DD were home. It was about 10:30 PM. I went upstairs to check on her. She was fine, just said it scared the crap out of her. I came back downstairs, looked out the back and the pasture was in flames. I yelled for her to come downstairs and I got the phone to call 911. I told her to call the neighbor behind us, because it looked like the flames were spreading to their house and I knew they were in bed. We still had power at our house, but my DMother's house was dark, and she always leaves a light on in her kitchen at night. The flames from the fire in the pasture were reflecting in her window and made it appear there were flames in her house. I told DD19 to call her and to call 911 back to let them know that not only was the pasture on fire, but the house was, too. We jumped in the car and sped to her house. My DMother was standing in the middle of her bedroom (she had her pjs on and she was putting her bra back on LOL) and she said, "My house is on fire". I told her that we knew it was and that she had to get out of the house. There weren't any flames, but there was lots of smoke. Her smoke alarm was going off. She asked me about her dog, and I went to get her off the front porch. When I came back after my DMother, she had gotten a chair and was trying to go into her attic, where we thought the smoke was coming from. I wasn't nice. I said, "Momma, get your ass out of that chair and get out of this house!" The fire department was very quick to respond. My DD19 had called my DBrothers and there were plenty of family members to help with my DMother.
She is staying with me until her house is repaired. They say about 6 - 8 weeks. There was a good bit of damage to her bedroom and lots of damage to her living room. Smoke damage all throughout the house. The insurance company had someone clean some of her clothes ASAP and she had them back on Thursday.
She hasn't lived with anyone for years, so I know it will be hard for her to get used to staying with us. Everyone please pray for patience for all of us to get thru this and if you don't pray... send good thoughts. We are all just so grateful that she was uninjured."Strong is what we make each other." ~ Marge Piercy

I'm happy everyone is ok, and I think you are lucky to have your mom so close to you when this happened. God only knows what would have happened if she lived somewhere away from you. Hugs and prayers.
