Ugh, tonights episode of 30 days left me disgusted
I can't stand the way some people just have completely closed minds about simplicity. I forgot about how incredibly uneducating and uncaring the majority of some people are. "Cars running on vegetable oil? That will NEVER fly with the mainstream". I hate to tell her, but it's already out there!
On the other hand, I thought about how incredible it was for that entire society to live totally off the grid and grow their own produce. They truly had a great system going on there! I would love to go out there and stay and learn a few new things. And I totally loved how since they were vegetarian/vegan they composted their own waste! Really loving that solar-panel energy there, too!

It is on F/X at 10 on Wed. night. I saw it for the first time last night. Dancing rabbit community is in Kirksville, MO. Not too far from here. I have to up that way in a week and thought I'd look to see if I can find it if we have time.
I heard the Muslim one was a good episode too.

Found their web addy! Anyone know where to find the calculator they used to determine how many planets there would need to be if everyone used resources like you?

I used the calculator and it said I would need 6.7 planets and that I needed 30 acres
. I think what hurt me was that I have a commute of 300-400 miles total per week to work and that I commute alone. I am curious to see how everyone else does on it.

That's it! Mine said I needed 2.1 planets. But I really can't get too much lower, unless I go to the eco-living of that society, which I think I just might go out there and stay for a week!

Ours (for DH and I) was 1 1/2 planets with 3.2 Acres for food. Pretty good since we don't have a garden. We buy mostly local and other things in bulk. I can't wait to take the test again when we get our own home, grow our own garden and use more alternative energy sources!!

CATEGORY GLOBAL HECTARES
FOOD 1.1
MOBILITY 0.1
SHELTER 2.2
GOODS/SERVICES 1.8
TOTAL FOOTPRINT 5.2
IN COMPARISON, THE AVERAGE ECOLOGICAL FOOTPRINT IN YOUR COUNTRY IS 7.6 GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.
WORLDWIDE, THERE EXIST 1.8 BIOLOGICALLY PRODUCTIVE GLOBAL HECTARES PER PERSON.
IF EVERYONE LIVED LIKE YOU, WE WOULD NEED 2.9 PLANETS.
I need to continually strive to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Thanks for letting me know when it is on. It sounds interesting, I'd never heard of that community before.
