Savouring summer
We are being blessed with a lingering warmth and sunshine. Even thought the days are beginning with fog in the valley the afternoons have been gorgeous. So I am cherishing each and every lingering bit of warmth. I am stubbornly wearing shorts and sandals for as long as I can get away with it. I haven't turned on our heater yet. I haven't used the dryer in MONTHS! I am still getting produce from the garden.
I am still buying BC corn and peaches yum, yum.
I keep rushing inside every blooming rose.
But the colours are beginning to turn so I can't pretend that it is summer for much longer....
I will have to turn to fall.....
warmer clothes, baking, pears, apples, pumpkins, stews, long walks, crisp air replaces soft warmth....
What does the end of summer...and the beginning of autumn mean to you?

I have two different views of summer's end.
One, with the end of summer comes cooler days and the idea that my utility bills will rise. It also means flu season is close at hand. And the days are becoming shorter.
Two, with the end of summer comes relief from the heat and the changing of the leaves, which is very beautiful. It also means I can once again cook the comfort foods, soups and stews, and baking becomes the main stay of our meals. I love the hearty, warm meals of fall and winter. It also means that soon I will be seeing the beautiful white snow that blankets the earth and makes it all look so pure. I see more deer in the winter than in the summer. I miss the song birds of the summer though.
It means school is in session and my DD isn't complaining there is nothing to do...LOL and I can pile my blankets on at night for warmth. Love this part.
I love the warmer days of fall though, especially Indian summer, and wish it could look and be like that all year around.

Winter won't arrive here til after Thanksgiving. We'll have Thanksgiving Day dinner with the doors and windows open and in our shorts.
But we can tell where winter has arrived by the parking lot at the grocery store. This week I can park right up close to the door and all the licenses plates are local. As winter creeps down the license plates change and the lot fills. By Thanksgiving Week you park in the north forty and you can see plates from Mich, New York, Conn, Vermont, Maine, Canada, Ohio, etc. In fact finding a local plate becomes a game!!
Here big screens are put up over the pumpkin patches to keep the sun from burning and exploding the pumpkins. You wait til the week of Halloween to cut up your pumpkin because it rots so fast in the heat.
I look forward to our weekend get away up to a northern state like Georgia or North Carolina for our leaf visit.

The end of summer & beginning of Autumn means comfort to me. No more sweating and bugs go bye bye.
Love the cozyness of the colder months...getting dark earlier, fires in and out~ warm your tummy and soothe your soul soups and other comfort food~pots of tea~ families gathering together, lingering and just enjoying~ birds eating their fill and splashing in the birdbath~jammies on early and reading lots of books.
To me it's the best time of the year.

I love all the seasons for their different beautiful aspects. For us fall and winter a filled with birthdays and holidays. Tons of celebrating to do. The thing I enjoy most is the changing leaves. Back home we had basically two seasons- dry and rainy- lol! Here there are four actual seasons so we are loving it.
