not single but i would leave it to who i wanted - 20 years ago when i was in my 20s i would have been thinking oh be fair to everyone etc but really now i feel there are some people who wouldnt appreciate it and would feel they just deserved it in my family and who are bad with their own money who i wouldnt want to have it .
if you have better relationships with certain family and you feel they would use the money smartly its yours to give away -
so they get mad at you - you are dead who cares- you died knowing you did what you wanted - thats what life is about .*~Debbi~*

I have a child, but my opinion has been and always will be. . .it's your money, you do with it what you want. If you want to leave it all to one family member, then do it. I sure wouldn't feel that I had to be fair to all whether they were close to me or not. You won't be around for the fallout anyway.

I've been giving this a lot of thought since my mother passed away about year and a half ago. It's just hubby and I and our two kitties.
On my side of the family, I have nine brothers and sisters and 12 living neices and nephews plus 4 great neices and nephews. That sure ends up being a pittance when spread that way. I know that some of my siblings are doing *quite* well for themselves and are well equipped for their retirements. I know that some are doing *quite* poorly through poor choices (such as gambling). Personally, I don't feel like supporting either end of the spectrum.
So if I were to give my money to siblings, it would probably be to the most "middle class" of my siblings - those who have kids and I'm pretty sure haven't been able to save up much money at all and don't really have many prospects going forward either.
On hubby's side he has his parents and one sister. I think his parents are financially stable. His sister quite likely is not, partly through circumstance, partly through poor choices.
I'm mostly inclined to give my money to charity and say screw it with the families.

I left a prosperous and well paying career for life in the country and hobby farming and because I am not one who enjoys having money. Yes, you read that correctly, I cannot stand cash. Of course I make soap and candles and birdhouses for small change to feed land tax, but overall I get all my "earnings" through trade and barter with my Amish and Mennonite neighbors. Since I don't have children, I've arranged to give my homestead to my neighbors when I pass on, so really I give back to what I've traded with them in the past.
