My adventures into soap making
I'm going to making soap over the next little while and thought I'd start a thread and tell you my adventures. I will probably take some pictures as well so let me get started.
When I first started on this journey of being self-sufficient, on the top of my list was to learn how to make soap. I've been putting it off for a number of years, but the adventure starts on Monday.
The first thing were doing is saving the fat from the 2 pigs we got. Dh has strict orders to keep it ALL. I'm going to be making soap the old fashioned way, so on Monday, I'll be rendering down the fat and then storing it in jars.
I'm going to be using the recipes and instructions found at www.waltonfeed.com
So come along with me for the ride. It should be fun and I can't wait to see the end result. I also need to purchase the lye and borax (which I might have to do in the city). Not sure if I can find those supplies here or not.
More on Monday!!

So many things to try, such little time lol

All the fat I dh saved is now rendered down. I'm going to have to get some more fat because I don't think I'll have enough. He didn't save it all.
Its now cooling and once it is cooled, I will drain the water, scrape off any small pieces of meat that in on the fat and then store it until I get back from my trip.
I just found a place to order some fragrances, so I'm going to call them tomorrow (Canadian btw) and see how soon I can get some here. I definitely want a bit of fragrance in my soap.
More to come.....

Well Dee, I was baking cookies at the same time the fat was being rendered, so all I could smell is the cookies.
I also did it a bit different. There were 2 ways to do it, and I used the simpler way, rather than a possibility of a fire.
I put 1 qt. water and some fat and let it simmer for 1/2 hour like the instructions said. Then I drained the water/fat. I had to do that 3 times (with the fat I had). Now it has to cool in the fridge. Once its cooled, the fat will of course rise to the top.
I could have cooked down the fat, but you have to be so careful with fire and with Michael close by, watching everything, I didn't want to take the chance.
When it comes to doing the lye, dh will have the kids in the workshop, so that there is no chance of them touching it in any way.

How's this going C.J.? I want so badly to learn to do make cold process soaps. I hope I get a chance soon. I found a seller on ebay who sells a kit with everything except the water and lye I think I am going to purchase it and see how it goes.

Angelee, funny you should bring up this thread. I just sent a pm to someone mentioning this soap making adventure. Dh is making me a frame to put the soap in and I'm picking up lye and borax on the weekend if I can get into the city. The weather has to warm up just a wee bit before I travel to far.
All my fat is rendered and froze, so its only picking up the supplies. I'm excited about doing this.
