I posted a thread some time ago about the word itself that can have negative connotations to lots of people. I decided "stocking the pantry" was a good euphemism to use when not on FV. No one needs to know how deeply stocked it is!

I like "stocking the pantry" as well. I tend to assume that people associate the word stockpile with hoarding and greed. It just comes across strong. Like the word "hate" instead of "dislike". People sure don't complain when they need something you have stockpiled though....

I like the word stockpiling. My TP stockpile is so nice,so is my dishwashing liquid, hubby just brought home another load of meat from one of the little groceries he deliveries to. The best meat ever, and from a little mom and pop store.
I have plenty of box goods and mixes, and canned goods out the you know what.
I love going to the grocery for just milk and fruit/vegs., and ice cream.
We also rotate and mark everything that needs to be marked.

Donna, I read that thread and it was great.
I completely agree that alot of people automatically assume things, I know that I have friends that I discuss my "stockpiling" with and others that I don't even mention it, for this reason.
It's almost like a stigma or something, "Oh, you're a stockpiler?" "I see."
Then of course comes the 100+ questions about why I do it, how much do I spend, where do I store it all, yadda, yadda, yadda.
It's just easier not even to bring it up.Michelle in middle Tennessee!

Exactly.
I completely agree with this.
While I know there is a fine line for some people, because stockpiling could easily become an obsession, I think for the most part people think of it as abnormal or "out of the norm", so they automatically jump to these weird conclusions?Michelle in middle Tennessee!

Well, to me emergency prepardness is another "branch" of stockpiling.
Just because we stockpile doesn't necessarily mean that we have enough water, dehydrated foods, a way to cook this food without electricity, batteries, camping gear, candles, etc. for an actual emergency.
I know in my situation, this is one area that I want to work more on in the future, but right now after our move, getting my grocery stockpile in order is my first priority.
I think beginning with things you can get for free/cheap with coupons & sales, is a great way to start your stockpile.
You're not out alot of money, but your still buying things that you would normally buy and use.
Yeah, the whole rotating items I think takes time to learn. I know this is something that we're working through right now. Although I've not had to deal with much of it, because we're just now getting our stockpile started back up.
I think stockpiling is a very personal thing, simply because everyone has their own system, certain foods they buy and how they will store it.
But I love hearing about how others feel and how they go about dealing with the weird comments and such, it's great to know we actually have some place to come and chit chat about it, without being judged.Michelle in middle Tennessee!

I guess this is one of those areas where I just don't care what other people think LOL. I stockpile and I'm proud of it! It's seen us through some very lean months lately and if something happens I know that my family will eat for quite a while and that's much more important to me than what someone else thinks.
I've never come across anyone with a negative attitude about it. Alot of people I know don't/won't do it, but they don't make negative comments to me about it. And if they ask me alot of questions about it, I answer them. I figure they just might be interested and give it a try and I think it's a good idea for everyone to have a stockpile!S
