all frozen foods GONE!!!
well gustav came by to visit, power was out for about 6 days. everything in the chest freezer (small one-but way filled), everything in the top freezer and everything in the fridge - all gone.

took 6 large contractor bags (filled halfway due to weight of food) to get it all out...got some replaced, but waiting on the emergency food stamops they gave to help replace spoiled food...all that seafood, crabmeat, shrimp and crawfish tails, ground beef, chicken, chops...will be slow to replace and restock.
2nd time now since katrina did the same thing...well i guess it'll get done over the next month or so....i hope there are no more storms this year...all the evacing and coming back and trees down and limbs all over...getting too old for this i think lol
sorry to go on but i had to vent....

you have my sympathy.

ike survivor, ladykemma11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

...but least i had it to use and not use my cc's when we had to evac...i gave $100 bill to my mom to help with other expenses while we were gone and she was shocked to see i had all that cash - now that has to start all over too...ah the joys of living in s.e. louisiana!

I don't know if you own or rent but with our homeowner's insurance, I can call and tell them we lost all the food in our freezers/refrigerator during such and such a storm and they send a replacement check. I don't have to have receipts ~ I just estimate it. Maybe yours does the same?

my mom and i own together and unfortunately, they don't cover spoiled food...they covered pretty well for the roof, cracked window, crushed fence and a pool with a tree limb through the side among other things but not the food
weird cause i had thought most insurance companies did cover....oh well. such is life

Oh Kaki, that's just awful. I'd be in tears too, you poor thing. I sure hope you'll be able to stock up again soon and find some awesome sales to boot. Hugs.

I really feel bad for you. We lost half a beef one year while on vacation. I don't know what was worsing losing all that money or the smell after it had been without power for a week.
Anyway, I hope that you get everything back in order. Really sorry to hear about your problems.

That's too bad. Our renters ins. covered the 2 times we lost power and lost our contents of our fridge/freezer when we lived in VA.

I know sorry doesn't help at a time like this, but I am truly sorry you lost so much.

We lived in Florida for 6 years and the up and down really is enough to drive a person insane.
Here's hoping for a easy hurricane season next year.
I agree with PaulaPAFW, I would definately check with your homeowner's policy to see if they would reimburse you for even some of it, it would at least help to get you started.Michelle in middle Tennessee!

I'm sorry you lost so much.
I do have a question and although it is an afterthought, wouldn't it be worthwhile to buy the tiniest of generators just to keep this freezer running in the future?Russ

Just got my power on last night after little over 4 days, I lost a few things, but scurried to find a generator and had it hooked up to the freezer and fridge. As mush as I love the South, and the ocean, I don't know anyone goes thru these types of things more than once. Ike was what knocked out our power on Sunday, and I live in Ohio. I am so sorry that you lost all of that, especially all of the seafood. Praying for all of you in Ike's aftermaths.

I'm sorry.

Another idea if the generator isn't feasable is to buy dry ice. We did that once (before we had our generator)and it saved our food. We bought ours from a welding co. hth someone someday.
