Strategy for stockpiling?
Do you shop for your stockpiles according to most neccessary items or least cost? That is, in a grocery mix & match sale deal, would you work it for the least out of pocket total or have a higher expense to get something absolutely basic like flour/sugar?
Wondering...

I would look for the best overall deal on the items that I needed most or could use the most.

For me stockpiling is more about having the stock up on food and supplies you use most, and trying to only buy when they are on sale, or with coupons so you buy at the lowest price possible. I also know that paper products, soap, shampoo and things like that you never have to worry about expiration, so they can be on the shelf for a long time without worry of them hitting expiration dates. With food you do have to be careful of that or you waste more than you save. I sit aside money each month for things to go to my stockpile. It doesn't have to be much, as even 10 dollars at a dollar store can gain you a number of things to add to the stockpile.

I look at the most necessary items being ones that I can try to get the best deal on, and I always look for a good deal when I go to the store. There are some items that I absolutely cannot wait for a good deal on, so I look at how much each item would be (like if it's toilet paper or anything that's sold in packs). I always base my deals on the price, how much is inside the package, and if I can get it cheaper.
I buy Club Packs before I buy smaller items.
Since I don't use coupons, I wait until it goes on sale before I buy it at regular price unless another item in that same category is way cheaper.
I just primarily look at the best deal I can get at that time and stock up on the cheapest item.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

My goals are a little different.
I just started mine. I want to put by a years worth of dry, canned, boxed items as well as HBA's and pet supplies.
Right now at least I am putting by a certain amount of cash each month and just buying, trying to get 6 months of everything on my shelves. I am also still in the process of getting my price book in order. I am also still needing 2 shelves and getting my room outfitted.
I am a work in progress.
After 6 months or when I feel some of the pressure off to just amass food because of recent turn of events in our country USA I will be more ready to bulk buy sales and let some areas go while beefing up others.
Of course I look for sales, bargains, bulk buys etc but as of this moment I want to be well rounded. I don't want to get caught with my pants down so to speak.
I think a stockpile can evolove and change as it needs just as a budget or a debt plan.
Good luck with everyones stockpiles! The math never lies, budget in INK!
Amount of Free items 2012 $391.33

Debt #2 12/31/12 CC $901.88
Debt #3 12/31/12 $3648.83
Madness, mayhem chaos...my work here is done!

I stockpile based on loss leaders - items I can get for free, nearly free, or paid to take out of the store. Oh, and they must be things I will actually use, as apartment dwelling means little space. I am able to cherry pick deals now and prettymuch only pick up fresh fruit/veggies/dairy/bread on a regular.

Coupon addict. Stock only what you use and use what you buy.

I do the same thing it is only things that are free or they "pay" me to take or for .50 or less.
I got about $144 in Cats for the glade deal so I used them to buy the staples like sugar, flour and dry beans things that I can not get a coupon for I stocked several pounds of food that way.

I use my stockpile as a way to take advantage of good prices on the things we use. The most challenging part to constantly rotate the stock and watch expiration dates. I also watch for seasonal deals or when something is in season.
