Default my food storage is wiped out...

which is good, it kept me alive this past year during a financial and personal crisis. I do the food storage LDS style, which is an entire room of floor to ceiling shelves. I still have all the wheat, milk, beans, and all that, it's the yummy food that got "et". the number ten cans stuff is relatively intact.

what didn't get eaten was the canned fruit. or the amish (yoders) canned meats.

sooo, i need to replenish. decide to do it piecemeal or withdraw 1000 from savings and just do it.

I need to make a list.

    be back...
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I did it a little at a time. I loved watching mine grow. Plus, I was buying it when it was on sale with a coupon, so I knew I was getting the best deal I could ~ which always makes me feel a little smug

You'll get it done, I do my regular shopping 3 months at a time and it used to be overwhelming but I'm used to it now. During the month I stockpile with sales and coupons. It's a good feeling to know you can feed your family!

I think you're wise is doing it a little at a time. It does become overwhelming. I look forward to reading how you continue to do this.

Have you considered checking your local grocery ads and stockpiling what is on sale each week that you need? Just a thought.

The #10 cans of dry foods is so much easier to take care of than the 50 lb buckets. IT will at least get used in my house that way.

i would except that i teach chemistry and physics. working 12 hour days, i look up and it will be march-- then it wil be TAKS test, then it will be qual lab, then it will be finals. so no time to shop sales or even think.

i just go to the dollar general and walmart and be done with it.

now over the summer, sure thing. shop loss leaders, shop sales, buy quantity, and have the time to be selective.

I just didn't mean for it to get this low. oh well, that's why the church leaders tell us to keep this stuff, for emergencies. our own internal welfare program. last year was trying times.

i have a strong testimony of food storage having lived on it three times now.

volumes and volumes written about this

    lds folks jump in.

do the basic storage first: I do #10 cans from the local cannery, from provident pantry or from walton feed

grains: wheat, oats, rice, flour, other grains 300 pounds per person
legumes: pinto, white, split pea, lentils, red beans 60 pounds per person
sugars: white sugar, honey, jams, preserves 60 pounds per person
nonfat dry milk 75 pounds per person
    dried fruit
iodized salt 5 pounds per person
    yeast, leavening
olive oil /ghee/ other fat 20 pounds per person
    vitamin pills

    fuel and light
    sewing kit and supplies
water (i keep 12 55 gallon drums of water in garage refill before a hurricane)
    bleach
    soap
    basic first aid
    garden seeds and tools
    72 hour bug out bag

then it moves into expanded storage and then "lah dee dah" storage - stuff you will actually eat.

I have (err, had...) lad dee dah storage
hunney, i store beefaroni, spaghettios, dinty moore, canned tomatoes, etc. it got wiped out during the divorce.

12-24 of everything. takes up an entire room of the house.
