Default I've been waiting for this....

Finally the store here is running a good sale on things I need to stockpile for winter! He has canned veggies on sale 12/5.00 which isn't as cheap as last year but much cheaper than I've been seeing them anywhere else. He also has the canned kidney beans I need and sugar on sale! And his sales are good for two weeks instead of one so I can go two weeks and get the same good deals! Whoo hoo!

I love it when I need to stock up & they run a sale! Sound like a really good deal to me & 2 weeks gives you more time to take advantage. I think .60 is about the best deal I can find on a regular basis for canned veggies.

We're putting in additional storage for canned goods this weekend (making shelves between the studs in an interior wall in the basement - the perfect size for cans). I'll also be redoing my inventory records (AGAIN - can't seem to find the "perfect" method for me).

We are also seeing some good buys on store brand items, and I'm busy stocking up, as well as more storage for dehydrated foods made here at home.

According to economists, we will be going through a period of price increases for food before the end of the year, so that food storage room is an "edible savings account".

I saw on the news a couple of weeks ago that grocery prices will be going up. They said beef, pork and grain items especially. I won't get to do much stocking up this winter because I'm laid off and money will be very tight. So I'm focusing on things I really need for the stockpile.

Also, acc. to our coop's farm bulletin, the winter here is predicted to be a bad one, so we all need to make sure we have the supplies we need.

Those are good prices. I'm doing some stocking up as well. A store here by me had ground chuck on sale for $1.88/lb. They grind their own and it's really good. I can eat all week off of 1 lb of hamburger! I bought 6 lbs.

    Great job on stock piling!

great! im doing the same stockpiling now while i can. hubby used to always ask me why i bought so much of one thing. now he knows better and at the store he asks how many! canned goods come in handy. i stock up as much as i can on all canned goods and baking stuff. if money is going to get tighter well i need to make it all stretch out even more. scarey to think how much worst things can get. but at least we are smart enouph to stock pile. i dont seem as strange to ppl i know now. especially once we had to live on it for awhile once we moved to fl.

There's something called a "strike point" in purchasing. That's when the price is at a price you feel is low enough you purchase as much as is reasonable. My SIL is famous for doing this with cans of Coke (LOL). She waits until it's rock-bottom prices, and then loads up. If it involves a coupon and limited purchase, she'll get everyone she knows to purchase it for her. She'll starve to death because she doesn't stockpile food, but the Coke will flow freely....

I've also read a story where the frugalite purchased a HUGE number of 1-pound chubs of turkey burger and loaded up their freezer with them. At some point, her family rebelled because there just weren't enough ways to make turkey burger, and they went on strike (LOL). So variety is still the "spice of life". You can also over-do a good thing.

Something to consider for those of you who don't have a separate free-standing freezer..... I only have the freezer on the refrigerator so I'm limited on space for frozen foods. I take frozen veggies and fruit and dehydrate it when I find them on clearance - or the best price point and I can stack savings. You can make parched corn with frozen corn: http://www.ehow.com/how_2100129_make-parched-corn.html

Here's a good video about how to dehydrate frozen food:
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYp1F29uoQw"]YouTube- Dehydrating Frozen Foods part 2[/ame]

After I dehydrate food, I store it in vacuum-sealed canning jars. Oxygen-free storage will give the food a longer storage time.
